Texas. *running away and ducking* 😁😘 This will be my first year as a parent for winter guard- high school level. I’m sure I will learn a lot!! No rest for our color guard... auditions are this week. My daughter was saying she needs to practice- but her flags and gloves are all in the rig and she won’t have them till tomorrow. 😬

I can’t wait to see what type of show Rouse HS puts together this year. They did well last year at WGI Austin and in the TCGC circuit. This year they have WGI Austin and the Power Regional in Denton on the calendar as well as TCGI competitions. Their director brings a “East Coast style” which has a lot more dance and elegance than the typical Texas Guard. I can’t wait for the season to get started.

It's been 10 years since I've gone to a WGI show.... hopefully that'll change this year.

It’s an absolutely spellbinding and beautiful activity. Nothing else quite like it, really. There’s a lot of reasons to love it!

Confirmed from a trustworthy source (kinda 😂): North Hardin Winter guard, 2020, possibly competing in WGI Would love to see a WG from schools like Stoneman Douglas. Vandy? They used dance this season. Would they even have a WG? Also, I am new to winter guard stuff. This is my first season on BOA and I have learned a lot, but I need Leander Momma to educate me! I know Avon is a big dog in WGI, but can you explain how it works and who the consistent finalists are? Also are there score sheets like BOA? Oh my goodness I couldn’t even begin to explain it, it’s so very different from BOA. It’s just such a gorgeous activity and once you see it, you can easily get hooked on it. Vandegrift does not do Winterguard at all because they do not have a guard. They are strictly a dance team that occasionally makes use of swing flags during marching band for important GE moments. They are fantastic at what they do, but they do not use any of the equipment needed to compete in WGI. It takes a lot of training and skill and it also takes dance ability, so it would be amazing if Vandy could learn to use equipment as well. They would surely be a force to be reckoned with in the WGI world if they did. There are three classes in WGI, with World Class being the most difficult and demanding skill wise. Avon most certainly dominates in this category and if you want to see what pure WGI genius looks like, here’s a link to their winning 2019 show. The next class down from World is Open class. The class down from that, where most Winterguard groups begin is Scholastic A. Once you have shown success in your class, you are moved up to the next level. Leander won Scholastic A in 2018 with the highest score ever recorded in that class, and now we compete in the Open Class. The Woodlands and CTJ have World class guards but they haven’t seen a lot of success at that level. Texas in general needs to start training these kids at a much younger age to get them anywhere near the level of an Avon or Carmel guard. Hopefully we will get there one day. I know I didn’t really explain it thoroughly. It’s past my bedtime or I would do a better job. However there are folks in here like Jake W. who know WAY more about it than I do. I just know I love it and can’t wait for the season to begin!

Hey, the Woodlands made it to the finals last year! 😘 they were thrilled with that accomplishment! Their feeder school has also started a color guard gym class so the girls are learning more and more skills before getting to Highschool... can’t wait to see where they take the program in the next few years when they’ve all been tossing since 7th grade. 😊

California starts them in elementary! 😱

Hi all! I'm new here, but a longtime lurker - hoping to be active on this forum for the 2020 season. Some Scholastic World guards that I'm looking out for (roughly alphabetical, only guards attending WGI Champs): Avon - consistent, clean, innovative - They're coming in with 2018 and 2019 championships on their belts. What always gets me with Avon is their attention to detail and how they reflect the music and its lyrics in their design. Expect them to come at full force this year with another near-holy, life-changing show that makes you forget that you're watching children with flags. Carmel - 2019 Silver Medalists. Under new direction, yes, but they haven't skipped a beat. Their fall season was superb, and it still looked like Carmel. Their 2019 finals performance pushed them from 4th to 2nd, and in my opinion as a dude on the internet, was the most emotional program of the night. But, I also really like Kate Bush. Center Grove - I got to see their 2019 show live, and these kids have got it going. The growth from their 2015 season to now has been exponential, and the kids buy into anything their directors give them. Expect them to be a medal contender this year (They got bronze last year!) Fishers - 2019 SO Champion. Their marching season was phenomenal, and I think that I remember reading comments from brass players about how good the guard was (They must be good then). I'm excited to see them excel in SW. James Bowie - Texas is represented so well in SW, and Bowie really lead the charge with their John Cage show a few years back. Every show since has always challenged some established design aspect of the activity (in my opinion, not a judge) and presented it in full color. Had they gone to WGI last year, I think they would have placed safely in the middle of finals with their demanding and fun "Primordial Goop" show. Lyman - My favorite show across all classes last year. This guard EXCELS in the movement caption. This past year, they made their first trip to WGI in world class, and they broke a 90. Their shows always have an accessible theme, and I'm so excited to see how they follow last year's sultry and sophisticated "Love Triangle" show. Expect them to settle into their character even more this year as they establish themselves as a SW name. Miamisburg - Echoing a past post, these kids are top-percentile weapon handlers. Their shows are always super sensitive and precise. I really do think that they could be a medal contender this season. Northview - A guard with a history (20-something time SW finalist). I'd expect them to have one more on their belt in 2020. Norwin - Our only Pennsylvania guard in SW at the moment. Their 2013 show is one of my favorite guard shows ever. Last year, they saw a program best by finishing 7th above some SW powerhouses (flanagan, lyman, warren central). I think that they'll keep pushing upwards this year. Palm Desert - I am SO excited to see this group competing in SW this year. Each member handles each piece of equipment so confidently, and I think that their training and skill set will fit well on the SW scoresheet. Expect large ensemble weapon moments with incredibly clean releases and, of course, solid catches. PCEP - The 2000s kid in me was DEVASTATED when they missed finals with their Britney Spears show last year. I would love to see this group in finals this year, and I think that their weapon skills have been SW finalist caliber for a few years now. Shenendehowa - Frog show! Shen always brings in theme-heavy, GE packed shows, and they've totally found a home in SW these past few seasons. Stoneman Douglas - I do think that last year was a little off for them, but man did that show go hard. These kids are fearless, and they've been consistent SW finalists for the past 5ish years. I don't expect them to give that up this year. (Everyone look up their 2017 show if you want to see something pretty.) Tarpon Springs - This group had James Logan-esque SW domination for a few seasons. I think that other guards have stepped it up to match them. It's always unreal seeing them perform then having to remind myself that the performer that did a front flip beneath a seven is probably 15. Trumbull - Any year could be Trumbull's year, really. Their "Bound" show came into WGI with such unexpected force that year (they hide out on the east coast). Last year's show was one of my favorites of the season. I don't think I've ever seen highschoolers handle such a mature and relevant theme so gracefully while making it accessible to every audience member. Warren Central - This guard doesn't miss finals. West Broward - Their 2013 finals run is one of the most energy-packed shows I've ever experienced across the activity. They've had ups and downs ever since, but in recent years, they've established themselves as a medal contender while being a fan favorite (a really hard thing to do!). These kids are given some of the coolest shows to work with, and it's hard not to love a show that the performers 100% buy into. There are so many other groups that are potential finalists (Bellbrook, Park Vista, Ayala, Arcadia, Arvin, North Syracuse Central, Somerville) and I'll touch on them as the season unfolds, I'm just tired of writing. Hopefully this helps answer "who's who?" for the posters/lurkers that are new to the activity!

Lots of exciting competitions coming up soon! I'm not sure how much discussion will take place since this site isn't really oriented toward indoor, but I will certainly be sharing some opinions from the shows I attend. Since I'm living in the Nashville area and not working with any groups this year, I'll be attending (and working) many of the SCGC shows. I'm also planning on going to the WGI Chicago regional, both percussion and guard weekends of the Mid-East Power Regional, and both weekends of WGI championships.

I tentatively plan on being at IHSCGA New Palestine, WGI CG Indy, WGI Percussion Indy, IHSCGA CG state finals, IPA state finals and both WGI championships. Maybe an additional IPA show too.
I say tentatively because I may be only afford the WGI Championships at this point. We'll see.

I’ll be updating as much as I possibly can on my Leandermomma Instagram account. I plan to attend TCGC Austin (Jan 25), WGI San Antonio (Feb 1), WGI Austin (Feb 29 & Mar 1) and the WGI SW Power Regional on Sunday March 22 for finals. Lots of great stuff to see. Definitely my goal to attend my first world championship in 2021.

If I’m not mistaken these are all the groups that will competing in Scholastic World Class this year. Very excited to see what these programs have to bring and excited to see new names on this list. * Timber Creek * Maui * Dripping Springs * North East independent school district Does this include non-WGI participants? I was having trouble finding a few of these on the schedule. I was especially excited seeing Maui, but no WGI for them it seems. I can't tell if they've ever had a traditional winter guard, but their 2018 performance on Youtube is intriguing for what it is. Very curious to see if they ever send a traditional guard to WGI like Mililani.

I’m still not certain NEISD is a thing. I mean CTJ is from that district so maybe it’s referring to them?? I have never seen an entire district have it’s own separate guard in Texas. Particularly a World Class guard! I wouldn’t think you could just start out as World Class in your very first year.

I believe the concept began with mostly Winston Churchill and Reagan members, but can't recall exact info or if CTJ members ever participated. If they did, it makes sense NEISD wouldn't be around anymore with CTJ fielding their own guard. All I can recall is that they made world class finals in 2016: wgi.org/historical_scores/2016/

Chino, Diamond Bar, Flanagan, Timber Creek, Cape Fear, and NEISD have all fielded SW groups in the past, but the WGI website is out of date. Very excited to see what these programs have to bring and excited to see new names on this list.
