Are the standings like the Hornrank of Winter Guard?

One thing I noticed... Marian Catholic and Brownsburg missed finals?! Are they not as prominent on the WGI scene as they are on the BOA scene? Marian Catholic fluctuates with their talent level each year. I know they were in Open about ten years ago, when they had an incredibly talented group (I think the most accomplished one is with Carmel now). Unfortunately, this group has not been on par with their past shows. I would hesitate on saying Brownsburg has a prominent prescence (though I will agree they have a significant presence of sort) in BOA, but yes, they are very far from most programs in WGI. Brownsburg's pageantry arts program only got its massive boost in 2016 on the marching side. That success is only starting to bleed into their winter programs. Brownsburg doesn't have the strong history in pageantry arts like some of the other Indy suburbs. Are the standings like the Hornrank of Winter Guard? So this is from the WGI Color Guard Adjucation Manual and Rulebook on pg. 106 (as mentioned in the standings): The seeding score is based on placing groups with evenly balanced rounds as such: Round 13, 6, 9, etc. Round 22, 5, 8, etc. Round 31, 4, 7, etc. It's really nothing more than a seeding score, but it's a useful tool to see where everyone stands. Hornrank is opinion-based, though I personally would vouch for those voting as they are pretty objective about where they think bands would slot.

Marian Catholic was even in Scholastic World at one point. I don't think they were there for too long, but definitely a few years. They've been really up and down for decades now, having finished as high as 5th place in World, to missing out on Scholastic A finals.

Are the standings like the Hornrank of Winter Guard? I keep telling Jeremiah he needs to start one of those and call it GuardRank.

Kind of but these are actually pretty accurate:) But the one downside is that it ranks based on the seeding score the group receives rather than the score they received that week. Also we still haven’t gotten to the Florida guards yet so it’ll be interesting to see how much it changes Are the standings like the Hornrank of Winter Guard?

Is Lyman coming to championships this year? I would love to see them back because they probably had my favorite show of last season.

Is Lyman coming to championships this year? I would love to see them back because they probably had my favorite show of last season. They'll be there. Hopefully they'll bring back the same magic as last year! Watched the Independent World groups at South Brunswick on Flo. Ranked on personal preference. 1. AMP WG - intensity was there, and you could kind of tell what the concept of the show was. I missed what the show was called, so maybe that's why I couldn't fully tell. 2. FUSION - really liked this show 3. The Brigadiers - good show/story being told. 4. Black Watch 5. Alter Ego - kinda dirty, but things you can fix for tomorrow. Glad to see someone else who enjoys both sides of the activity! I tuned in for pieces of SO and IO, and then all of SW and IW. My favorites on the evening were Main Line Independent in IO (still say they should have made WGI finals last year, but they're out for blood this year for sure), and Somerville in SW. I adore Somerville's show this year. They've been one of my favorites for many years now (including last year's beautiful show on Alzheimer's which hit a little too close to home). They have only come close to making SW finals once since their 2015 SO title, but I'm hoping this is the year it happens. Their show this year is set to Justin Timberlake's Blue Ocean Floor, an unexpected artist to feature in a winterguard show, but also one of his most unexpected songs. It's very un-JT. Their show is a very different take on an Ocean/"The Deep" type of theme, simultaneously ethereal and exciting. Definitely needs a lot of cleaning and some tweaks to timing of tosses to match dynamics and impacts in the soundtrack. The score doesn't look great but it's not far off the mark from where they were in the 2018 season where they narrowly missed WGI finals. I'm hoping for great things out of them. I'm going to need to watch IW again tomorrow. I was a bit surprised by a few groups in positive and negative ways, most positively surprised by Fusion. I love that they've created a show theme on diversity. Their approach to it is so weird and so wonderful - I love it. I was expecting a bit more out of AMP, to be honest. Their show was called "Risk it All" and was a secret agent/Bond type of theme, but some elements just seemed very odd. I was getting used to their high-drama, thematic shows that were fantasy driven. This one fell a bit flat for me. It seemed like a mixed bag of spy/secret agent theme songs with no clear story other than a protagonist with pink hair running around the floor, and the costuming seemed like an odd choice. When I think spy/secret agent, I don't typically think gymnast/body-suits. I'm definitely going to need another viewing of this show tomorrow. Wish they had multi-cam at regionals so I can see more of what's happening on the floor.

Amp had a much better run today. Favorite of the day by far for me. I always LOVE what they bring and this year is no exception. It’s nice to see an accessible, intense, fun, and fast paced program. We do not have enough of this! Their open guard had a cute program as well.
Fusion was also very solid. A lot of talent with that group, happy to see them in the top end this year!

Every time I see that middle school my jaw drops...
super proud of our junior high getting 1st and 4th with their varsity and Jv guards in the cadet class at their competition yesterday. But they can’t do that yet... 😀

This is a middle school guard performance from a California WGI contest yesterday. 😱 I'm not 100% positive if any middle school guards have made WGI guard finals before (a percussion ensemble definitely has), but if not, they'll likely not only make finals but will probably also go home with a medal. I'm still convinced they would have won a medal had they come last year, and I'm sure they'll do so this year.

Looks like Bellbrook did petition to drop down to SO mid-season after all, and they appear to have been granted that class change. They're now listed in SO class for the remaining WGI events they're attending, including Championships. I'll miss them in SW; they had a solid four seasons with two Finalist berths, and are fielding another exceptionally talented group this year. But, I did feel like the tiny-but-talented 11 member group would have fit better in SO at the Indy Regional, and as srv1084 pointed out, there simply didn't seem to be enough members on the floor to achieve the depth in design that is required to compete on World Class sheets. Best of luck to Bellbrook on a competitive rest of the season in SO!

I imagine they could do pretty well in Scholastic Open this year as the show is certainly both creative and demanding. I only hope if they do succeed that people don't try using the "it's not fair that they dropped a class to be more competitive!" narrative, because that's not what this activity is all about. I will say, I hope the move is temporary. They were a unique voice in SW.

Surprised at how many world class groups will be attending wgi Chicago this weekend, I’m excited to tune in and see how they’ve all improved and changed since Indy. including the other classes of course and excited to see the ones I haven’t seen yet, too bad Ben Davis and Decatur central won’t be there.

This made me a little sad, and I hope that it’s temporary! Everyone should see their show this year - I LOVED the set design partnered with Radiohead Soundtrack at Indy. It’s a big set, but conducive to a smaller guard (various “stages”). It’s a super clever show. Looks like Bellbrook did petition to drop down to SO mid-season after all, and they appear to have been granted that class change.

If you catch their fall shows their guard is usually in the 14-20 member range. That means everyone in fall is on the floor for winter without a hs JV program. The school is on the small end of AA for BOA and were competing with much larger schools in World Class. Their director and design staff always come out with a unique and entertaining program, this year is no different. I’m hoping they can garner more interest in the school and build the program back up! They do seem to have a full middle school program from what I’ve seen on social media so that gives me hope. I’m glad they are in Open for the remainder of the year and I’m excited to see them continue to grow and work their way back up!

Two quick thoughts on the Union City show this weekend:
Golden Valley HS - It's a shame this group is not making it to Dayton. They seem to have come out of nowhere in recent years in SW, and this year's show would land them solidly in finals should they have decided to attend. Very well designed and executed by a group I'm sure many outside of California have not heard of.
Imbue - Good lord, this show is mesmerizing! Exciting, beautiful, DIFFICULT. They have some real James Logan early-2000s swagger going on this year (is there a staff connection?). I would love nothing more than to see them take home the gold this year, and I really think they can do it. In my opinion, this is one of the absolute "can't miss" shows in Dayton.

It’s a shame Golden Valley is not attending! I have to admit I have not heard of them before this season but I’ve seen clips of their show and I’ve seen scores lately and I’m impressed! Hopefully they will be attending Dayton next year with that same fire and energy. Do we know yet what groups will and will not be attending Dayton? I’m at Tulsa today. Mustang HS Varsity felt more like an Open group than A to me, but they’re not in finals tonight. They would have easily made it in, so I can’t help but wonder what happened. That was an electric show.

Also could Greenfield central possibly drop down to A next year after dropping to open this year? It’s too bad they had such a good program in 2017 really hoping they can pick the pace back up.

It was an odd prelims for Indiana for sure. The judges didnt even seem to agree. 1 had center grove .4 below Avon in GE and another had them .2 above. Carmel did not have a Carmel like show doe them. I expect to see them bounce back. Warren central continues to improve and clean. I enjoy their show! CG had a good run but had a better run at WGI chicago prelims. Avon had a good run but they too can do better. Be interesting to see which guards show up at state:)

It will be interesting with Avon with them closing all of the schools until March 20th because of the CVOID-19 cases. The School District cancelled all practices as well. Then the week of March 23rd is Spring Break.
