I have visited the future. Your 2019 GN Finalists are (not in order, I don't want to spoil it completely): Avon H.S., IN Carmel H.S., IN Claudia Taylor Johnson H.S., TX Hebron H.S., TX Leander H.S., TX The Woodlands H.S., TX Vandegrift H.S., TX William Mason H.S., OH Park Vista H.S., FL Round Rock H.S., TX Union H.S., OK Harrison H.S., GA Harrison has had some significant director changes over the last few years since their last GN trip and faces similar issues to Kennesaw regarding recruitment and scheduling conflicts with upperclassmen & AP requirements, which has been consistently keeping their numbers lower than many AAA groups. They're back on the rise, but I question their abilities to break back into GN Finals. They are not the same band nor under the same direction as their previous GN Finals berths. It's certainly possible this year, but there's no way in hell they top Homestead & Union, and very little chance they'll be able to pass Park Vista or Ayala. This might change as they continue to grow throughout the upcoming season, but at the end of 2018, I had them right on par with North Hardin, PCEP, & Lawrence Township, were they to have attended GN. I am also dubious of Round Rock's chances of making Finals, depending on which group shows up. Last year they were a well-performing band given a truly subpar show design that they vastly outperformed by the season's end. I would have placed last year's RR band & design around Fishers & Franklin had they attended GN. The band seems to be at a crossroads and I'm VERY curious to see how well they reinvent themselves for next season. They're the biggest question mark heading into GN, in my opinion, and unless they show up with a much improved group & design from last year, I cannot see them tackling Park Vista, Ayala, or Center Grove (depending on which group CG shows up with as well). Either way, I do not see them touching Homestead or Union. About Round Rock? Y’all ain’t ready. I’m not saying they’ll make finals, but I’m saying it will blow last year out of the water.

About Round Rock? Y’all ain’t ready. I’m not saying they’ll make finals, but I’m saying it will blow last year out of the water. There's very little I would love to see more than RR coming back insanely strong next year. I see them now where Homestead was after 2017 and missing Finals...stuck in a bit of a "safe" design rut for a few years and facing a wake up call. I was skeptical of Homestead's outlook for 2018, but they totally bolted out of their rut with an incredibly fresh show and music & visual demand amped up tenfold. Basically, the design team learned from missing Finals, took extensive notes on what they were doing wrong, and fixed it. That's what I want from RR. The only reason I'm slightly skeptical is because after the failures of 2017 (missing SA Finals, barely squeaking into GN Finals), they seemed to dig their heels in and put out an even less thought-out, more vanilla show design in 2018. And sunk even lower in the SA rankings, particularly in the GE captions, where all 3 judges had them nowhere close to the Finalist groups. Will two seasons be enough to "right the ship"? Why didn't it happen after 2017? One could even argue that they've been steadily falling in placement since their peak in 2013, having not matched anything close to that year since. I really, REALLY hope RR comes out with fists swinging this year; I also wonder why it's been 3-4 seasons of "more of the same" while everyone else around them continues to shoot up in skill & design. That all sounds really harsh...to be clear, all I'm saying is that I'm a bit skeptical that RR comes out swinging for the fences, but I would *LOVE* if that is the case. They're one of the best-playing bands in the country, and I would be thrilled to see them come out with a design to match that again. I would be ecstatic to see RR back as a consistent SA & GN Finalist year to year!!

They made substantial design staff changes. Things will be different, and better. I'm glad to hear that, and I really look forward to seeing how well they bounce back this season! I would be thrilled to see RR back as a lock for SA & GN Finals each year.

Round Rock knew they had been stagnating the last few years. After missing SA finals in 2017 and barely scraping in GN finals they made major staff changes. Among that was their CG director/show design concept person who was fired last spring. I guess you could say RR was in an in between phase last season. I'm excited for their show this year. I have a good feeling about them for this coming season.

I forgot to add to this while I still could, but keep in mind GNs are a week later. For some schools, that means an additional out in the winter to practice. That may why the enrollment was lower this year.

I think Homestead and Park Vista are pretty sure bets for Finals. Both have locked in a design niche and have the talent to do so. I think Ayala could also make finals if they can clean up, their shows usually are pretty top notch (and expensive enough) LOL, especially if Rosie Queen is their color guard Director.
Round Rock has the means to make finals, we know this. But can they design a show that will play to their strengths and of a high quality....? I hope so!
Harrison has a better chance of making finals than Kennesaw Mountain did last year. But they seem to be struggling on a lot of fronts, recruitment, design, and retainment. Kennesaw Mountain made finals with pretty small bands in 2010, 12, and 14. If they can focus on quality with what they have it can be done but they need a show not like 2017, or 18. I think now that Wes Cartwright is gone from their design team it will not help their chances.

I don't see homestead completely missing finals and judging by round rocks show reveal looks like they've made some design changes that will for sure help them climb back up

Good catch on Jackson County; I had overlooked them when I made my list. Also, Blue Valley West is from Kansas and Greendale is not from Michigan

Greendale on points or class rep?
They weren’t that close on score last year and if they are a lock this year then there are a number of bands in their score neighborhood last year that should be considered as well.

Brownsburg was a semifinalist in other years and has potential for and proof of improvement. This year, that makes a lock IMO.
Greendale is the band we all keep holding out on to make semifinals on score and it just hasn't happened yet. Frankly, to make it on class would require either luck on the part of the panel arrangement and/or beating Bassett/Jenison which to my knowledge hasn't happened yet. If Greendale makes it, which I think is really really possible, to be honest, it will probably be on score without any class placement (and they'll probably be the fifth 2A band in).

Greendale has been 5th overall in Class AA for their last three attendances (2015, 2017, and 2018), and still have not made semifinals, a lot of the time out-ranking bands that did make semis (like last year when Greenfield-Central and Camdenton got 6th and 7th but made semis), and they would have made it had they performed on the other day/panel and scored the same. Talk about rotten luck. Their time is coming. This year could be it. I agree, it will most likely require luck with the panel arrangement to make it in as a class rep, but luck has not been ever on their side in that regard. I think they could JUST sneak in by score near 30th place if they have a killer run.

Greendale may have a 4th place in AA waiting for them, then. Hopefully Bassett & Greendale will be on the same panel separate from MC and NH.

Good call on Brownsburg being a Semis lock, but this is actually their first GN trip ever (they could have went at some point in the 80s or 90s, but I don't believe so; they've never been a big force in the Indiana marching band world until recently). They've made BOA Indy Super Regional Finals two of the last three years, and ISSMA State Finals 2 of the last 3 years, in each circuit beating bands like Lockport, Penn, Goshen, Lake Central, both Lakotas, Centerville, etc. In 2016, Chris Kaflik joined their staff as a director (formerly at Broken Arrow, and a Carmel/Blue Devils alum), and brought along Wes Cartwright for show design, and they've shot up in the ranks since. They were always a massive program, generally marching 200-250+ for years and years, but rarely making any waves in ISSMA, maybe made state finals once or twice in the last few decades, although never too far from making it either. No BOA participation that I know of during those decades, or spotty at best. Anyway, it's a wealthy suburb on the west side of Indy, the school district directly north of Avon, and it was just ripe for some skilled direction & competent design staff to come in. I don't think they'll be in the GN Finals conversation yet, but a solid Semifinalist for sure, maybe even knocking on the door of the top 20. Either way, I believe they'll eventually become another Indiana force to be reckoned with.

I will also pile on the Greendale love --- an incredible band that just flat out doesn't ever get to compete with groups at their level. They've been close to GN Semis by varying degrees, and I absolutely adored their darkness show last year. I had them closer to Semis than they landed, not that they were that far. If they come out swinging on this so-far weaker line up, they could finally crack in to Saturday morning. I would love to see it happen; they seem to be an incredible group of staff & kids, always putting out the most unique shows.
If anyone didn't catch them last year in GN Prelims, there's a good quality video on YouTube of the performance, and it's totally worth watching. Such a great, engaging design. If this is where we're at that that show & performance level was 12 bands out of Prelims, then that's a terrific sign for the current state of the marching arts.

Looks like Texas is going to make this a pretty competitive nationals. If Flower Mound, Broken Arrow and/or Tarpon Springs were to attend that would be amazing. I know they're not, but one can dream.
Potential first time finalists; Most likely Vandegrift.
Other possible first timers: Park Vista, Fishers, Rockford, Brownsburg; all have been on an upward trend the last few years. Gonna be tough with the current list of participants but not out of the question.

Where is the best area in LOS to sit for BOA finals? I plan to order tickets the minute they become available but I want a general idea of where to sit. I’m sure all of the best seats will go to groups and those who purchased them at BOA GN last year.

The judges are in 440. 540 isn’t too bad. The 600’s are great for seeing the overall visual, but not so great for music. By the way, I’m watching DCI Finals on Flo and it occurs to me I have no idea who to call about a Mortgage. Any ideas?

Thanks for the info!
