Speaking of small bands, I counted roughly around 120 for Center Grove. 60ish winds, 17 guard, 30-35 perc & drum majors. This has got to be the smallest group they’ve ever fielded, and they’re never known for being large as it is.
That said, CG was pretty strong. They are coming out swinging after their disappointing 2019 season. Guard & percussion of course are the best of the best. The Gabriel’s Oboe ballad actually gave us some really delicate and musical moments, something we haven’t heard from CG as much in recent years.
They’re certainly not back in the GN Finals conversation yet like they were in ‘17 & ‘18, and I don’t expect them to rise out of the 20s in GN Semis, but I would imagine they’ll make their way safely back in to Semis. Bottom half tomorrow night, but I imagine solidly in Finals. Nice to see this program remaining scrappy & innovative, and pushing themselves forward!

I actually don’t mind the Center Grove show this year. I appreciate that they spend most of the production all together on the field. Their world class guard and percussion certainly shine.

It’s evident why Warren Central is at the top of ISSMA Scolastic class. I wish they would venture back into open class some day.

And we literally got a show that had Baby Shark being played, and bubble machine's going including on several props including this beauty. At least this show knew exactly what it was. Terre Haute South HS Indy Super Regional

I haven’t lived in Indiana in a number of years and they haven’t done any BOA, so I haven’t caught a performance of theirs in probably ten years. I was pleasantly surprised today! They would hang quite well in Class A, and frankly, I’ve only got them about 2 points behind MPLT. I would imagine they’ll safely hit mid to upper 70s at this event.

Is there a breakdown of what division each band is in for this Regional. Thanks.

Not until the Prelims recaps are released late Saturday after Finals completes. Not even the judges have access to the class assignments.

I’m so proud of Noblesville! From track band, to dipping their toes into ISSMA in 2019 and now to this. They have grown tremendously and quickly! I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them. Gotta love that trumpet soloist.

Lawrence township has an interesting show, should be in finals tomorrow night, but to me it felt incomplete. Anyone else get that feeling? Incomplete as in pretty bare bones from a design standpoint, but I think that’s just where they’re at this year. I definitely felt the performance was up to par but yeah, barebones is probably the best way to describe the design

Noblesville was great, lots of smoke and creepy chords and good marching. They're only going to get better.

Holy....wow. I've seen some shrinkage cause of Covid but Ben Davis is the first I've seen a truly noticeable difference. They are so small now! That said, they are still playing pretty well. It's all about quality in this game. Still, it's sad to see it happen.

That was definitely a the best effort from Ben Davis this season. I’m still not a fan of the amount of amplification they’re using.

A third band to add to the shrinkage list, I counted about 105 total for Ben Davis. Similar to MPLT & CG, about 60 winds, then BD had roughly 20 guard & 20 percussion.
Their staff seems to be largely unchanged, so I hope they’ll rebound quickly in the next few years. But wow what awful timing Covid was in their improvement arc —- after a few rough seasons that were out of line for historical expectations, they finally came out in 2019 with a banger of a year & show design, comfortably made GN Semis, and really set themselves up to springboard back into relevance. Unfortunately, that bit of tenacity & inspiration from the successful 2019 season is all but evaporated now.

I’ve got Center Grove in the bottom half of finals, with Lawrence Township, Decatur Central, and Ben Davis on the bubble in that order. If Decatur could just control some of their umm…stronger players, I think they’d be solidly in. What a well designed show.

They’ve finally latched on to some engaging, complete-package designs the last few seasons, and I love seeing it. Decatur has always been a great group, and I’m happy to see them finding success recently. I’ve got Decatur leading the MPLT-Decatur-Noblesville-Ben Davis pack (frankly, I see Warren in that mix too), but I don’t think anyone from that pack will crack the top 14, or even be able to pop anything more than a random sub caption or two up into the Finalist mix. I’ve got Decatur around five points below CG, and the rest follow from there.

Bummed we won’t be seeing Hamilton Southeastern next weekend at ISSMA semi-state. This is my favorite show that they have ever produced.

I also was really impressed by what they brought to the table this year in terms of design. It would’ve fit in really well at Semi-State. Those kids play well and move well, and they field a solid guard program. Hopefully this year’s penalty-related disappointments don’t hold the group back for the future, they looked great today!

Apparently they decided to let them compete, despite the penalty.

Idk… anything that wasn’t in impact moment was pretty dirty for Brownsburg. Feet looked kind of a mess whenever zoomed in. The show has a nice palette, and their impact moments are nice. Soloists were fantastic

Brownsburg was incredible. The first “top half” band we’ve seen today and boy did they deliver! They are having such a special season, and I see no reason why they can’t hang with DB, Wando, Blue Springs, Castle, Homestead, etc. when GN rolls around.
Goshen & Greenwood impressed as well —- I’ve got both groups behind Center Grove but in above the MPLT/BD/Noblesville/Decatur grouping from earlier in the day. Goshen in particular seems to be an easy pick to grab that 3rd place AAA spot behind Castle & Franklin.
Looking forward to the rest of this block! The first three groups really showed up to play.
