Are there new judges tomorrow? Or do they just switch around?

Those music scores from The Woodlands are worrying. Agreed. Not sure what to make of it, I thought their performance seemed a bit shaky. Jay Kennedy all over the place. PEARLAND 25th in content? RR is 30 by one judge in woodwinds? Really? The scoring seems to be all over the place. In such a highly competitive event such as UIL 6A SMBC (21 of the top 43 bands in the country if you believe last week's HornRank poll), the real question isn't "why are some judges 'all over the place'?" but rather, "why isn't there MORE disagreement across captions?"

Usually with state finals, there’s more predictability with results, I wouldn’t be surprised if the podium we got in prelims is the podium that sticks in finals, have yet to look over the times but Vandy, Marcus, and Hebron all have state titles, they know this game well.

Remember: UIL weighting is WONKY to say the least, don't put too much weight into where bands finish and think it translates to other circuits Ehhh, you could easily plop in the State finalists here and nearly all of them make finals at BOASA, as is usually the case. The other notable 5A bands squeeze in, but there isn’t much surprise or “wonkiness” as to who makes it in. Plus I think you can gain some insight with the caption ratings as from what I’ve seen in recent years, judges call it like they see it, and you can have a snapshot of what bands are excelling in and lacking some as well.

SMBC finalists making SASR finals is not the issue. There is often poor correlation between relative placements in the two events, thus the comment about lack of translation to other circuits.

SMBC finalists making SASR finals is not the issue. There is often poor correlation between relative placements in the two events, thus the comment about lack of translation to other circuits. Naturally there would be when the method of scoring, really ranking of bands in specific captions is undertaken, definitely much easier to do with 14 bands in the upcoming finals, compared to 40+ bands. The issue of wonky figures exists heavily in Super Regional prelims as well, when in some cases, close to double the amount of bands participate, not exclusive to UIL in any regard. Lots of head-to-head competing between top groups and quality adjudicating are still taking place here with 6A state that should still be treated as such, just like with the common disclaimer that distinct BOA contests shouldn’t be compared with each other, the same should apply to this contest to said events. The argument of the scoring rubric standardization being more favorable with BOA is a valid one, but I’d also argue it’s a bit of a moot point when that common disclaimer is repeatedly said. In larger contests, margins are tight between placements, the gap in the scores won’t be nearly as large as the potential gap in placements as we’ve seen at the really large super regionals and Grand Nats.

Coppell's flugelhorn soloist in hallelujah is incredible. Maybe the darkest and warmest flugel sound I've ever heard.

The Woodlands. Oh. My. God. 3/3 streak for me these past years, and this show certainly makes it known. That was honestly the most energetic performance I've seen this season, and I do not say that lightly. Yes, I'm partial to their niche of shows, but jeez, that was nothing short of electric. Can't to see this fine group live next week

I say it again and again every year. TWHS is the most Indiana program we have in Texas! GE for days and days!!!!
Today I was paying attention to their final run and I can see why music is not at the par against the other elites (UIL standards). I still think they can possibly pull a State title but I feel they will absolutely take SASR this weekend! Minor visual cleaning but ME should peak nicely at Nat’s imo!
Amazing job TWHS ❤️

Maybe it was the uncharacteristically cold & muggy yesterday that had many finalist bands working through intonation problems but today is another story! All these bands sounds and look wonderful! Hebron and FLoMo OMG 😱

VR doing VR things! Design was super clean but a bit less demanding than many of the other finalist groups this afternoon. Musically those ensemble tension and releases along with powerful music demand was spectacular. It’s finals (SMBC) Finals (SASR) and finals (GN’s) for this program! ❤️

Why not 😏

It will be very interesting to see how/if the scoring changes the order of the participating bands at GNs. I will be superglued to my screen.

One note about yesterday's 2A Champions, Rivercrest has had quite the extraordinary glow up. The current senior class got a 2 3 2 at UIL their freshman year, then the very next year they got a 1 for the first time in recent history and also qualified for State for the first time since 2006. This year was not only their first State Title, it was also their first time ever in State Finals. Couldn't be happier for their band program and their fantastic educators.
