I LOVE VANDEGRIFT do not get me wrong. I was probably one of the people cheering the loudest when they won in 2019. I was not a big fan of their performance today. I think you could tell they were rushing a bit nearing the end of their ballad and the percussion and soloist did fall behind a bit noticeably on stream. There were a few noticeable times were players jumped in too early. Visuals were stunning and near perfect. I did not enjoy the music. Did not find it very effective and I don’t think they’re the strongest musical group to perform today. They are the best visual group by a mile though. They marched unbelievably well, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them win visual

Ann Richards is 1A, right? Is there anyone here who will keep them from performing in exhibition tomorrow night? I’d really like to get the chance to watch their performance. Right now I have Pecos ahead in 1A. Ann Richards did put on one heck of a performance, though. If all else fails I'll try to find a video later. Thanks!

Of all the shows I expected Leander to perform this year, this was NOT it. I'm very happy about that. Lots of fun moments, especially that trumpet quartet section. Performer buy-in is everything with a show like this, and when the audience is having a blast you know they're all in. Getting some major Bluecoats vibes from Leander this year and I'm here for it. I will say, the ending felt a bit abrupt, but to see the rest of the show and the transformation from earlier in the season is something special.
Also, tuba soloist: GOOD GOD, MAN.

I can definitely see Vandegrift being just the slightest bit one-upped by a few groups here, it’ll be so tough to gauge if that happens ‘cause they’re very solid in every category, are they indomitable though in any this year? Besides visual, potentially I don’t think so. Caption awards/rankings will be the first way to see how they stack up, even though they can of course change in finals👀👀

Wow Leander!!! "A Long Strange Trip" loved the show. Have not posted in here in a couple of years, but when you put the Grateful Dead in a marching band show it love it!

Super fun show from Leander. I haven't been following Texas results super closely, but haven't they been consistently under Cedar Park and Rouse this year? I'm not convinced they should be under them, or at least the gap should be very close. Would be super strange for me to not see them in Finals

That tuba player waving at the camera made me laugh out loud. Leander, that was such a fun show, can’t wait to see it again tomorrow night.

Coppell just announced that they've been moved to tomorrow morning at 9:45 AM (Still panel 1). What happened? They didn't specify, just mentioned unforeseen circumstances on their social media. As far as I know they were supposed to have had a rehearsal at Claudia Taylor Johnson High School in the afternoon so I don't think travel's an issue. Might be that BOA asked them to move times for some reason and they agreed, but I don't really see why.

Vandegrift's band body is amazing. Wow. Those kids are gaining an incredible experience in that program.
With no context, the first half of James Bowie's show had me thinking "I never knew marching band could be haute couture." By the end, I figured the show must be referencing some storyline/topic that I missed. Still, if only as an abstract piece of art, I found it mesmerizing. I REALLY hope they get a second performance tomorrow!!

Ok, Leander & Bowie. First and foremost, both groups have grown MASSIVELY since their Austin performances and have so much to be proud of. Both staffs clearly know how to pull it out of the kids!! I really, really wish both bands had like...2 more weeks in the season. I really don't believe they'd be too far away from their normal selves with another week or two of cleaning. I do really enjoy both shows. I appreciate what both groups are doing this season. AND, both guards, while obviously halved in size, still look like great guards, and both fielded super complex and layered work for ensembles of their diminished size. Color me impressed.
In terms of the full ensemble sound, there were certainly noticeable blend and out-of-ensemble moments in each performance, although maybe not enough to keep them out of Finals. Each group brought numerous other strengths to the table today. If you forced me to predict right now, I would say neither one gets another show tomorrow night in this deeply stacked field, but I said the same thing about MPLT at the Indy Super Regional two weeks ago and was quite wrong. I really do hope one or both of these groups moves on; it certainly wouldn't surprise me if either one did. The bones of great programs are clearly still there, and the amount each program managed to grow in a few short months speaks volumes to the staff, pedagogy, and procedures that Leander & Bowie have in place, which only signals a bright future for each, regardless of the results today.
I really did enjoy both performances though. If you took the names off of the screen and asked me pre-Covid who each group was, I probably wouldn't have guessed Leander or Bowie for either one. But I'm really glad I got to enjoy these two shows nonetheless.

Bowie plays so well, but I really don’t get the show From what I got “Intersection 34” is supposed to represent how everyone in life intersects, whether you cross paths with someone for a very short time or that intersection leads to someone bigger these intersections are all impactful and make up our society and who we are. Hence the people in the giant middle circle I think? And how throughout the show you have two guard members sort of getting together into like a relationship I think? Don’t take my word. I think it’s touching on how if we lose these connections we lose part of our humanity, as if these intersections are the very thing that makes up what makes us human? I don’t understand the symbolism of 34 or anything else but this is what I got.

The extras/actors seemed to interact throughout the show and create a path based on those meetings, supporting the thought behind the impact of human interaction. Also loved the little chance meeting between the two soloists at the bench towards the back of the field. James Bowie has done some abstract shows very well over the years, and now they're even managing to make a show with narration abstract. I'm really loving it. Their guard has noticeably gone through some changes since their Scholastic World days, but their percussion has definitely stepped up over the past few years. I personally see them in finals at the moment. Timber Creek was a really pleasant surprise as well. I was not expecting them to be quite as strong as they were. Some really great musical selections, as well.

Having that “1 away from 6A State heartbreak” monkey off their back finally, their morale and motivation must be off the charts, and it was noticeable in their performance tonight! Looking forward to seeing what Timber Creek does in 6A state and how they grow in years to come🙏🙏
