Let’s have some fun If all of the confirmed and very likely bands were to attend, what is y’all’s way to earlier predictions like Only one Texas band makes finals, and American Fork and Fishers both finally break into finals. Tarpon places bottom half. In semis, Homestead is unlucky number 13, and Kiski places top 20. I don’t think either of Hendrickson or Southlake will miss finals at this time

That's crazy for such a new school! I think they should for sure be a semifinalist. We will have to see if they continue to improve this year in earlier regionals to see if they are on the finals bubble.

They’ll have to push for a finals finish but it’s not completely out of question. Really surprising announcement albeit an interesting choice.

Really surprising announcement albeit an interesting choice. Can I ask what qualifies as “too soon?” What is the appropriate time span before a Texas band (any band?) should attend Grand Nationals? Perhaps they are going for the experience and know they will likely have at least two performances. Maybe they aren’t gunning for three. Why not go?

Very expensive trip, I don’t want to be that person but you definitely get the most bang for your buck when you know your program is really gunning and in the running for 3 performances. Going for experience is great, but it’s very very expensive experience. It’s really disheartening for a lot of bands when they go to GN and see everyone else land in finals except them the way it’s happened in the past. I don’t see this boosting morale too much. The school opened only a few years back, it just feels too soon. One season of competitive success just feels like too little to pack up and trek up to Indy. We’ve seen bands easing into going to GN, like Caroll, Coppell going to St.Louis before making the leap for experience and it’s worked out great for them, with Southlake even jumping into UIL State finals and Coppell placing the highest they have in years. I’m in the camp that I don’t believe the first big (very expensive) leap for a band should be nationals, especially when you run the risk of lowering morale.

I’m in the camp that I don’t believe the first big (very expensive) leap for a band should be nationals, especially when you run the risk of lowering morale. Well, I guess I will respectfully disagree. Many bands fork over the money to go to Grand Nationals knowing they won't even make Semi Finals. It is very much about the experience of performing in that venue, meeting band members from other states, seeing all of the regional differences in show styles/design, and just soaking that "Grand Nationals Feeling" in (I just don't have words to describe it). Keep in mind that if a band waits a few more years, many of its current members will have graduated and have missed out on the opportunity to go. Those kids that go will remember that trip for the rest of their lives. Maybe they want to give as many of those kids in the early/formative years in this new band program the chance to experience it. They did not have Semi Finals when I participated. I would have loved it if they did. We could have performed in front of a big semi finals crowd and enjoyed the experience of watching finals whether we made it or not. No reason that should lower morale. If anything it should ignite a drive amongst the younger band members to strive to be even better the next season. The point of Grand Nationals was never about making finals or becoming Grand National Champion (yes I know that is a goal of many bands), but it was never the point of holding a Grand National Championships. It was to bring together bands from all different sizes and different performance levels from all across the country in one big competition and celebration. Having been out of high school for 30s years, I vaguely remember most of the competitions we did. However, I remember very well each one of our trips to Grand Nationals, some were a bit disappointing and one was really exciting for us, but I loved each and every one of them.

This is the same situation as Cedar Ridge right? Third year of the program existing and is making a trip to nats, and it paid of well for Cedar Ridge. This is also arguably the weakest nats pool we've had since 2018, and 2023 is not the year to go with all the rotation years (TWHS, RR, CTJ, Hebron) I guess we'll just have to see

I’m in the camp that I don’t believe the first big (very expensive) leap for a band should be nationals, especially when you run the risk of lowering morale. Many schools have done what MG Johnson is doing. For Example, 1. Ronald Reagan opened in 1999. In just 4 years they went to GN making finals, after the fact they won the Houston Regional the year before. Just like Johnson. 2. Claudia Taylor Johnson opened in 2008 and again in 4 year making an trip to GN and I believe the only achievement CTJ has achieved in the BOA World is that they made finals in the bottom half of an 2010 Regional. 3. Cedar Ridge opening in 2010 and was able to achieve 11th place in GN finals in short span of 3 years, and now look at them now. 4. I mean Green Level (NC) opened in 2019 and they're making their trip to GN this year after one successful season in 2021. Many of these bands had, or are going to for sure heighted their program going through this experience and get huge support from their communities. supersound your argument goes against any of these schools competing in GN because it's too early and expensive. To be quite frankly if they didn't go my opinion is that we wouldn't have seen the level of success they had after their first GN performance. Adding on, Johnson HS is an blank slate as they have never competing in GN so anything is achievement at this point not like Round Rock who has an higher standard than Johnson as they have always competed in finals before 2021. Plus, we do not know if all of the Texas bands are all going to make finals as we do not have the full list yet, and most importantly it all counts on the students and their team. However, whether they make Semifinals or Finals the student's morale should be skyrocketing a lot of bands could never achieve their level of succession in such an short period of time. As for the expenses FUNDRAISE, FUNDRAISE, FUNDRAISE! idk isn't that what Texas HS MB are known for is their money they put in each year. Along side other things too as well. I Hope you don't feel like I am attack you. I'm just opening up an discussion.

I was curious about Prosper's status and the fact that they hadn't formally announced a GN trip yet, so I perused their website. Calendar for 2022 is mostly raw still with just penciled-in dates (most Saturdays in October read, "Marching Contest Date"). They do have UIL State specifically marked in their calendar, and then nothing after that. You would think GN would be on the calendar in metaphorical ink by now if they were going. However, a quick glance over their most recent link in the News section of their website reveals a little blurb about Music Travel consultants attending their upcoming parent meeting to discuss plans for & answer questions about their upcoming GN trip. So, there's that! I assume that's referring to 2022. That's all the evidence I could find, although that is certainly evidence enough, and I didn't comb through all of the past weekly news bulletins.

Prosper could definitely make finals on performance captions again, but I think the show design would have to really be working for them - the smile show ain’t gonna cut it IMO.

Carroll Senior came out of the gate with their full show last year at dallas, and while they definitely had the vehicle that would eventually get them to 6A finals, it was mighty dirty early season. They are a large band and the cleaning came, just not early.
Their show also had a lot of very exposed musical moments not usually seen too much outside of the top Texas groups. Carroll is sort of what I thought Seven Lakes would become a few years ago.
If they come with another adventurous design than I think they stand a good shot at finals.
At St.Louis they posted some pretty decent scores in a stacked field, definitely one to watch.

I feel like Class AAA has FINALLY gotten interesting after years of it being relatively obvious who the top 4 or 5 are going to be, given the small number of AAA bands that usually attend (and with little competition).
So far every single AAA band confirmed to attend has a realistic shot at semifinals. Love it!
