Boston Crusaders: "White Whale" Well I guess it’s not 100% pirate themed but still dealing with an sea type concept (sorry if I got anyone’s hopes up) but regardless I’m extremely excited, think they will do great things with this show! I've heard some recordings of full ensemble from their winter camps and the music is incredible. Oh, and a little birdy to ld me not to discount the possibilities of pirates...

Probably no live shows for me this Summer. Nightbeat this year falls on the Sunday night between two weeks of teaching band camp and I don't really want to get home at 2AM and have to get up at 6:30 for a 12 hour day of band. I should have at least a couple opportunities to see Crown during Spring Training though.

Dope. This piece has been crying out for somebody to do a show concept around it, and I think this creative team will do it right. Boston was in the early lead for Most Intriguing Concept... now they're in second.

Mandarins: “Sinnerman”Featured music:" Sinnerman" by Nina Simone [1] " Take Me to Church" by Hozier " Smile" by Nat King Cole [2] " Swing Symphony, Mvt. 4" by Wynton Marsalis " Présage" by Univers Zero " I'm Tired" by Labyrinth and Zendaya [1] An excuse to encourage folks to see the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo, which made effective use of Simone's 1965 version of "Sinnerman" (she first recorded this song in 1962) in its climax and which I prefer to the 1968 original starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. Here's the song. "But the Lord said, 'Go to the Devil.' So I ran to the Devil. He was waiting." However, "Sinnerman" is a traditional spiritual of uncertain origin, and Simone never claimed to have written it. (So do the Mandarins have to pay any royalties for it?) Here's a 1956 version from Lex Baxter's big band with Will Holt on the vocals: It seems the 1959 version by The Weavers is more like Simone's definitive take, but I can't find that on Youtube. (A version they did at a reunion concert is found there, though.) - - - - - - - - - - [2] An excuse to note that Nat King Cole recorded "Smile" in 1954, the year that its lyrics were written by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons, but the music was written 18 years earlier by Charlie Chaplin for his last silent film, Modern Times (and that was nine years after the success of The Jazz Singer prompted most film studios to switch from silents to talkies). Here it is in its original form -- spoilers! In 1972, the Academy Awards concluded not with Best Picture but with an honorary Oscar for Chaplin, then aged 82, and Wikipedia says he received a twelve-minute standing ovation. (I wonder how that played on TV.) Then Jack Lemmon and his cohosts led the audience in singing "Smile" (a bit awkwardly at first) as the credits rolled:

Blue Devils 2023 Show: The Cut Outs Featuring: The Rise by Dave Glyde, Caves by Cody Fry, JoJo’s Bizarre adventure, Jotaro’s theme, Resistance by Dave Glyde, Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell, Of Energy by Tesseract, Incident in Jazz by Bob Graettinger, and Grand Canyon Fanfare by James Newton Howard.
I must admit, as someone who’s not huge into BD shows, especially recently, I’m pretty excited for this one. Id be surprised if they don’t win again next year, hoping someone else does lol, but I think it will be an enjoyable show at the very least.

Mandarins show seems kinda blah to me. Phantom as well. I think Boston’s will be very accessible per usual, but I wonder if the GE will be high brow enough to compete with BD and coats.

that headwear is...a choice Snakes? Shedding their exoskeleton? 🤔🤔. Very intriguing. A quick Google search says that Exogenesis is "the hypothesis that life originated elsewhere in the universe and was spread to Earth." So I'm assuming it's intentional that they look kind of alien...

Yesss coming back again with Rachmaninoff. Wando's closer in 2010 is one of my favs. I JUST watched Wando 2010 yesterday! What are the odds lol... Great music, plus one of my favorite plume color choices ever! No way?! LOVE that show. Best drumline they ever had too. A symphonic sound but a bit heavier than their sounds now. But yeah the closer is so happy I love it. Plume color rocks!

If you had told 15 year old me, watching the weird-as-hell video for "Black Hole Sun" that someday it would be a standard part of the marching arts repertoire, he would not have believed you.
But, Madison sounds interesting, certainly more than last year. Looking forward to it.
