I went to Crown's ensemble rehearsal tonight and saw the first three movements through the end of the ballad. I can't comment a whole lot on the overall show theme other than there definitely seems to be a love triangle story going on. I'm really liking the brass writing so far and will be floored if they don't win the Ott trophy once again. They already sound amazing. The percussion writing is definitely 100% genuine Mike Jackson/Kevin Shah and the front ensemble is sounding pretty good to my ear. The drums OTOH...well, it is just the first week of June but they seemed a little on the dirty side to me for a top 5 corps. They do however have a ton of demand.

Bluecoats uniform leak…..yikes. But Bloo definitely is not afraid to be “out there” and they seem to bring it all together so withholding judgement.

The thing you have to remember about uniform leaks (and just regular uniform reveals for that matter) is that they can look disgusting up close and still look good from far away. However, some look bad up close and from far away. All I'm saying is that it should probably be a "wait a see" kind of thing with uniforms.

I love the Bloo Not sure why it was a secret anyway except that on surface is kind of cringeworthy

Went to Crown's ensemble again tonight. This corps can friggin play! I love the brass writing and the percussion is coming along. Drums have improved a ton since the last time I was there. Show design wise they need to do a lot more to bring the concept to the forefront. Visually I feel like it's there with the props that I've seen and the costumes (yes, the entire corps was in full costume tonight...no spoilers 😉). But while there are hints of a storyline going on it just doesn't seem obvious to me if they're actually trying to tell a story, which I feel would be beneficial, versus it just being a theme show which I feel like would be a big missed opportunity. We'll see as the season goes on.
As of tonight they're doing four movements and ended at "the ending" but I'm like 103% certain that there will be more to add on to the end.
And lastly, again, THIS CORPS CAN FRIGGIN PLAY.

This theme screams for the show to have a story told.

Crown costuming = pretty cool.
BD costuming = perfectly acceptable. Just fine. Par for the course. Not a problem.

There’s a video on Instagram under the account Jareddrums of Crowns premier… OMG!!!! HOW DO THEY ALREADY SOUND SO GOOD?!?!? They definitely took all the negativity about last years show, and are giving us what we want! This is the Crown that most have come to know and love! I’d be beyond shocked if they don’t win the brass caption this year. It’s gonna be a heck of season for dci, miles ahead of last year for this core.

I’ll withhold too much praise or criticism until I see a better wide angle recording or see them live, but initial take on crown for me:
Nice brass moments Very flat and plain shape to the arrangement same thing over and over Nice use of lack of movement to allow for challenging licks Selective mic use seems prevalent
On another note - saw the Bluecoats uniforms and they are something.

Okay my thoughts after seeing BD live tonight:
The brass is LOUD! I am not BD expert but dang they are really packing a punch! This is no 2018 BD thin sound that’s for sure. There were some misses in the guard(and some excellent moments), and some sets that were far from totally clean from an ensemble vis POV but that’s understandable so early in the season.
The opening hit is arranged rather… oddly. It’s not like last year with one big hit, this one builds slowly and ends rather abruptly - it’s really odd considering the source music for the “caves” piece. If any part needs a rework I think it’s this.
The JOJO song is great and full of life. But honestly the entire ensemble is already nailing it, it’s frankly a little easy for them 🤷♂️. The carnival of Venice stuff last year was more difficult.
The long drum break after is very nice, reminds me of the drum break from Round Rock 2019 with the French (matisse) quotes. It’s more high brow than the 2019 and 2022 voice overs IMO.
But guys… the ballad is where the bread and butter of this show is. I knew this would be great, but it’s better than great - it’s phenomenal. Arranged similar to last year but they do throw in some of their own style into it. I think what brings this one home for me is just the emotion of the music itself connecting with the theme… (why moon river fell a bit flat to me). The GE is just through the roof. There will be tears win 😉or lose I can promise you that.
Link to my unlisted video… I’m sure the other will go down fast as BD and Marcus are kings of taking down videos.

So far, liking this BD program much better than last summer. Still abstract, but less... deliberately obtuse? And, of course, the kids are performing phenomenally.
Could say much the same for Crown, actually.

BD sounds so good already! While they sound great, this seems like way to easy of a music book for them, and I have a feeling that because of that, they are going to peek musically to early, but i feel like a really good high school band could play most of this, but I’m not really feeling the show concept wise just yet, but it just feels to “Kiddy” for me, but regardless they sound incredible, definitely much better than last year in terms of music at least.

Crown is honestly destined to take home brass this year imo. BD is looking and sounding great but honestly it feels like I'm watching the same show from them year after year given how much they seem to stick to the same formula, just with different music selections. Obviously it works for them and with the judges, but idk if it works for me as a viewer.

I don’t know. That visual is spectacular and better than this time last summer. Yes I’m a BD homer but no way a majority of “good” HS programs can handle this production. The percussion book alone would cause problems. Yes brass valve movement is not what I would expect from BD but literally only BA, Keller, Coppel, CTJ, Vista ridge and a Hebron brass lines handle this book. These programs are far from a “good” high school band IMO

Sorry 😎 I know this will touch a sensitive nerve, but if you believe the select Texas groups you cited could perform the BD book, it's clear that Carmel could do so as well.
