A Marcus kiddo sent me a screenshot of their calendar this morning confirming that they will indeed be at the SASR. ♥️♥️ (I will protect my source at all costs. 😆)

Now I’m curious about the others.

Per usual, there are going to be some very, very good bands that don't make Finals here.

But at least Hebron and Marcus are going! After hearing time after time that Hebron wasn’t going, I really was thinking too they were going to take a “safe” approach to their Grand Nats ramp up, but wow, I’m really surprised to see them on the list!! It’s a pleasure to have them still attending SA, and I wish them luck with the State-BOASA-Grand Nats gauntlet! Same with TWHS!

Hebron signed up tentatively for if grand nationals just will not work for them for whatever reason which is marked in their calendar, which is reasonable as while going to state, BOA SA, and GN would be an incredible experience for the kids, the fatigue that would occur from that would effect their competitive performance and would cost so much to do, which isnt reasonable for most bands in general, would be a cool sight to see if they got 1st at all 3 😂

From the TXBand forums, seemingly from a Hebron band member:
“Unless Hebron doesn’t have enough members going to Grand Nats and the trip is canceled, Hebron will not be attending BOA SA.”
I will however keep them confirmed until MFA releases an updated list.

My understanding is that the district is requiring that all the programs attend UIL every year, and that the programs are otherwise free to determine their schedules in accordance with that requirement.

How did Marcus wind up getting to show up? Good for them but weird every other LISD school was kept from attending. My understanding is that the district is requiring that all the programs attend UIL every year, and that the programs are otherwise free to determine their schedules in accordance with that requirement. I hope that it is left up to each school to make the decision if they want to do travel other than the state UIL. State is generally paid for by the school districts- so if the district wants it- At least it doesn’t come completely out of the students families pockets to pay for it. Having been involved in a similar discussion on the positives and negatives of which competitions to schedule- there are so many factors to consider that it can’t be a cut and dried one size fits all decision. When looking at costs of travel for other competitions- it makes sense that if going to Indy or NY or Chicago for another event- not doing San Antonio twice saves close to $100- $200 per student- and even more for the families that generally travel with the group. A trip to San Antonio runs around 30,000 without any hotel nights for a group the size of these bands (just students and staff costs)- add a hotel night and it easily is over $50,000 for a one night marathon trip. With a 5 hour drive from the Dallas area- that’s a lot of money and a lot of exhaustion to add to their season. Houston bands face a similar choice- but don’t have as long of a drive. The west Texas bands have an even longer drive… with the recent costs of charter busses pretty soon it’ll seem cheaper for them to fly from Lubbock to San Antonio than drive it. (But then you get into the charter vs not arguments on flights)

I just don’t understand why state falls during the week… if UIL and districts are that concerned with taking time off, money, logistics ect then lobby to put it on a weekend …

There aren't enough weekends at the end of the season to accommodate all of the bands, especially since BOA San Antonio takes up one of them. Also remember that the Alamodome is where UTSA plays.

If anyone is up to the task, can someone list out the bands that are the most recent newcomers / have the least appearances here? I’ll let those younger SASR fans list names of newcomers cuz I’m old 💾 (although I think it would be a short list imo). What San Antonio boast is the overall field depth and the list of ever increasing lower bubble (sometimes old and new) programs that can easily catch the middle bubbles due to the overall competitiveness in Tx year over year. Success breads success. Since I moved back to SA I’ve been attending since 2013 and personally I would to love see more Corpus Christi basin area and several more west Texas bands attend regularly. One can only hope 🇺🇸

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but this year marks the 20th aniversary of San Antonio being made a Super Regional. San Antonio was the first and only super regional of 2003. Atlanta and St Louis were added the following year with Indy following several years down the road.
It was done to accomodate the rapid explosion of Texas marching band programs entering BOA in the early 2000s.
It seems like every year since, this regional has just got better and better.
Here is a rundown of the champions since this regional was made a super regional. This list includes past national champions and top level GN Finalists. Many of these champion performances would also be placed on many of our greatest all time BOA shows list.
2003 - Westfield 2004 - Ronald Reagan 2005 - Ronald Reagan 2006 - LD Bell 2007 - Marcus 2008 - LD Bell 2009 - LD Bell 2010 - Marcus 2011 - LD Bell 2012 - Marcus 2013 - The Woodlands 2014 - Claudia Taylor Johnson 2015 - Flower Mound 2016 - Flower Mound 2017 - Claudia Taylor Johnson 2018 - Flower Mound 2019 - Ronald Reagan 2021 - Hebron 2022 - Hebron 2023 - ?
