It's so wild to watch percussion as a non-percussionist. I'm like, "That one was the best one? Okay, cool, guess I trust y'all." It's like watching a debate or forensics competition in a language I don't speak!
I mean, I would have had Franklin Central and Dartmouth both several notches higher... but... something, something inner beats & shot quality, I guess?

Really wonder how the rest of the day is going to play out after this 2nd delay. Just looked at the radar & although that heavy precipitation spot passed, seems like the main rain band won't pass for a few hours

It's like watching a debate or forensics competition in a language I don't speak! I mean, I would have had Franklin Central and Dartmouth both several notches higher... but... something, something inner beats & shot quality, I guess? Walled Lake Central and Petal not being flipped is the biggest surprise for me, personally. To a lesser extent, Old Bridge being left out of finals. But WL is just criminal... part of me wonders if they were assessed a penalty. Franklin Central strikes me as middle to low end of the finals pack in execution, but their approach to their theme was just confusing to me. No subtlety in artistry yet somehow including elements that simply don't fit thematically or are lacking coordination and musical cohesion. Sometimes just "here's a bunch of pop hits and wacky waving inflatable arm tube men." Doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it! The members sell the hell out of the show. Just not the most nuanced or cohesive production in my opinion. Dartmouth designed to their performers' capabilities this year and it shows. Only one senior in that drumline. The front ensemble is spectacular and playing some pretty difficult and diverse music, but the drumline is playing a slightly more watered down book than we saw in the 2012-2018 era, and to an extent, last year (certainly the snares). They lean on their visual/dance ensemble a bit more than typical given the theme, and from a creativity standpoint (because let's face it, it's on the sheets as a criteria being judged...), I can see judges acknowledging how they "Dartmouth" the hell out of this show while not necessarily providing anything groundbreaking in comparison with some of those closest to them in competition. As a side note, it's kind of interesting to see how two groups with the same exact theme have such entirely different approaches this year (Clover HS is the other group). From a content perspective, Center Grove has the goods to deliver Dartmouth their first finish outside the top 5 if they nail their show in finals. Incredibly creative combination thematically while leaning heavily into Swan Lake. The Odette and Odile dancers provided some terrific contrast throughout the show. The only place they lost me a bit is in their attempt to arrange the Swan Lake theme alongside a Shawn Mendes song. Edit: Also, if it makes you feel better, I started in this activity 25 years ago and to this day I can predictably say each year that my favorite groups will likely not be the winners. I'll take personal enjoyment and originality over technically perfect design and execution any day. This activity already suffers enough from a uniformity in style and approach - there are years where I feel like I'm watching the same shows I've seen every year for nearly a decade, just with a different set.

There's something so hilarious about George Mason taking this tongue-in-cheek approach with their costuming/visual program looking like something out of humanity's early history while their capsules are leaving us little treats from the prehistoric era ... like an Eminem song from 2000.

I think it's a super fun show that's secretly super dark... these are our post-apocalyptic descendants discovering a remnant of the technological past after civilization has collapsed. It's Mad Max via Velvet Knights.

Seriously though ... just watching some older DCI videos and seeing how much time the field judge would devote to parking themselves right in front of the snareline at all times adds quite a bit of validity to this statement. Not always the case, but IYKYK.

Matrix seemed MUCH more organized today, and everything seemed to go smoothly at first glance.
But... missing a tenor player?

Did they only have two tonight? I missed it as I was spending too much time reading the screens (see: why I don't think they'll be moving up, even though I kind of love the show anyway...).

Watching Infinity now and they're having some balance issues with their electronics. They didn't come through that well yesterday, and it looks like they've over-adjusted today.

Not FloMarching forgetting to turn the intermission video timer off to account for all the delays.
Well, what I saw of RCC was excellent, but would have been nice to see the rest...

RCC appears to be down a snare. They did a great job patching up the hole in such a short amount of time.
Can't wait to see the full show tomorrow. This looks right up my alley. I would love to see a dark horse victory here given how much they trailed Pulse this season.

This Bono impression narration in Pulse is legitimately bad.
Love Pulse most years… not this show so much.

This Bono impression narration in Pulse is legitimately bad. Love Pulse most years… not this show so much. This is what makes me scratch my head. As a WORLD CLASS ensemble, what is so innovative about this show that has it ranked above Rhythm X, RCC, or Broken City? What are the World Class effects? Are their beats just that much more impressive than any other groups'? (Legitimate questions here as a non-percussionist)

The way that Modulation Z could seriously be an Open Class finalist with this show and cast... the skills displayed (at least visually—again I have no ears for percussion lol) are genuinely A Class. But their production value, design flow, and energy/commitment are sooooo next level!!
