Anyone else think the schedule for championships seems kinda light? I remember the days of 90 or so groups in PSA… now are there even 40?
Also am I crazy or is McM only doing Dayton and have not participated in any other WGI sanctioned shows?

This year alone there were 10 promotions to PSW and 15 promotions to PSO, and that's just the groups that are attending finals. I also think we're seeing a lot less participation from outside the midwest in PSA compared to pre-pandemic. I wonder if recovery (both in membership and cost) has anything to do with it.

Anyone else think the schedule for championships seems kinda light? I remember the days of 90 or so groups in PSA… now are there even 40? Also am I crazy or is McM only doing Dayton and have not participated in any other WGI sanctioned shows? McM also did the Hattiesburg regional (finals were canceled). 39 groups for PSA vs 42 groups for PSO (and 29 for PSW). That feels crazy!!! I haven't been following indoor (percussion) long enough to know how this compares to other years. But it's WILD how this compares to guard, who has 128 in SA, 48 in SO, and 21 in SW registered for Dayton. It makes me wonder... - What's COVID's influence on this? Has it eviscerated the amount of indoor groups in existence? And/or has it just made them less competitive and therefore less likely to invest in a Dayton trip?
- Is it just more expensive for indoor groups to travel, given there's radically more equipment to transport?
- Are there simply more guards than indoor groups near Dayton? SO MANY indoor groups exist out west, yet aside from the perennial PSW groups in Cali, most never travel to Dayton (due to $$$).
And then there's the proportion of PSA:PSO:PSW groups. Has it ever been this top-heavy? It doesn't feel intuitive that there would be so many intermediate/advanced groups with so few groups still establishing their foundations. Is it just easier/faster to develop an indoor group than a winter guard?

I also think we're seeing a lot less participation from outside the midwest in PSA compared to pre-pandemic. I wonder if recovery (both in membership and cost) has anything to do with it. This just reminded me of some independent AZ and CA groups who attended last year. Not only was gas exorbitantly expensive, there were so few Uhauls and Penskes available to rent. (The pandemic incited a MONSTROUS increase in online shopping, meaning companies like Amazon needed to rent more vehicles for delivering shipments. When Amazon offers your rental company $$$$$ for every vehicle in your fleet for months at a time, you're less likely to help out the little percussion group offering you $ for two vehicles for a week.) A logistical and financial nightmare. When it was all said and done, I heard one director say their Dayton expenses QUADRUPLED what they spent pre-pandemic. I heard of another PIW group whose director put $20k on a credit card just to get Dayton, fully knowing that that debt would accumulate interest until September when they'd collect some audition fees. "We have to get these kids to Dayton, even if that means folding right after." (Thankfully, they didn't fold.) I could see how last season scarred many non-midwest groups from going to Dayton this year.

The classification system in Percussion has gotten out of whack. Agreed it is out of whack. But in many ways, it is a flawed system from the get-go. WGI will never get it right every season. Especially in high school situations you will always have graduations/ staff changes among other external factors. I don't think covid helped this either. Clover is one example off the top of my head that should have been in PSO a few years ago. And I am sure some PSW should be lower on the flipside. I think fielding a winter guard is actually much easier and costs much less. There is much less equipment, and the music is not written (usually). I believe that barrier to entry is much lower. I totally agree on the Midwest thing. That is obvious looking at the lists now and taking into account fuel/ travel expenses in our current climate.

The classification system in Percussion has gotten out of whack. I agree. WGI has done this three times in the past ~15 years. Massive amounts of promotions to try to balance the classes. It's incredibly obvious what they're doing when it's this many in a season. It rarely works out for the groups being caught up in these mass promotions. Circa 2009, between 10-15 were promoted to PSO and only one made semis (none in finals). Around 2018-2019, another 10-15 were promoted to PSO. One made finals, and a couple made semis. I've seen a newly-promoted PSO group live this year and I honestly cannot point to one element of their show that constitutes "intermediate" skills. The battery is playing a book that I think would barely qualify for PSA finals most years. The most difficult thing they play is a mid-tempo paradiddle phrase, and nothing else in the book comes close to that difficulty. The front ensemble is playing a solid beginner book. Very little four mallet work, no cold attacks, no crazy 16th note runs. I'm truly confused why this group was promoted to PSO apart from looking at their score as a benchmark given how clean they were during the first regional weekend. We've also never seen anywhere close to this many promotions in PSW in one season. There are a couple that I've seen online that I seriously question what someone was thinking promoting those groups to PSW. Some are very, very clean, but performing a solidly "intermediate" book. Last year's split was 47 PSA, 36 PSO, and 18 PSW. PSA was light about 13-15 from the average of the previous few years, and PSW was light about 3-5 from the average. PSO has typically hovered around 35-45 so they were within range in 2022. I have no reason to think the trend class split between percussion and guard shouldn't follow relatively close. If anything, they should have split class A a long time ago to fill a gap that's much needed.

This is just a conspiracy theory on my end but are the judges made aware by WGI to promote more groups and therefore score accordingly?

They promoted 4 or 5 groups from Scholastic A to Open at the Indy Percussion Regional. A couple of them weren't top 3 competitive in Scholastic A for the Indiana Percussion Association in the weeks leading up to that regional. It was just a bizarre promotion. 1 of the promotions ended up 3rd in Open at Indiana State Finals, but the 3 others 6th, 7th and 10th. Admittedly, Indiana Open class is pretty darn competitive (Zionsville, Brownsburg, Greenfield, Plainfield and Decatur Central have all had WGI success), but still, just a weird promotion. On the guard question, I don't know if it is easier to develop a percussion group, but I think the Guard division is better managed.

By "score accordingly" I mean if the judges are aware that WGI wanted more promotions that the scoring would be higher to get to the promotion threshold. By "score accordingly" I mean if the judges are aware that WGI wanted more promotions that the scoring would be higher to get to the promotion threshold. By "score accordingly" do you mean give more lower scores? I'm sure it is just comparative analysis like it always is. There's no magic score when it comes to promotion. At least that's what has always been the case. Promotions have historically been about content. You'll even occasionally hear a judge comment on a tape after certain moments/features that it's not written to the class. There was a tape someone posted recently where a judge said "yeah, that's not A class..." after a PSA snare feature, but I can't recall which group it was. I've even heard of a case where a director has watered down some battery features to avoid promotion after being put on promotion watch because of judge's commentary and the rest of the ensemble not being at that level. Well playing groups also run this risk very often if their music is written to a high standard but the visual package is very beginner-friendly. With that said, you'll typically see groups popping high scores early in the season getting a promotion, though I can't comment on why that is. My thought is if you come out and pop an 85 the first week but you're performing a Class A book, you're simply a high-performing Class A group. Is that the best educational opportunity for your students if they're maxing out the show in the first week of competition? No, I'd argue it isn't, but it doesn't mean that group needs to be in Open Class based on the content they are performing, which should be comparable with their class peers.

It’s weird because they were regularly placing 2nd-4th place in PSA in local MEPA shows (and MEPA is a quality circuit, with good judging) constantly about 2-3 points behind Beavercreek and Kings. Come Indy regional they all of a sudden jump 10 points in a week and score in the low 90’s, some 5-7 points ahead in of groups who they lost to the week before. Was MEPA judging really that out of whack?

Dartmouth's drumset player got a lot of attention last year, and he's featured quite prominently in their show again this year. Posting a link of him below from the percussion program's showcase night. He was given the opportunity to perform a lengthy improv solo during one of their pieces, and the kid ended up going off for two full minutes. A little preview of the lot in Dayton (full show starts at 2:32:00). www.youtube.com/live/4cla93ZCJYg?feature=share&t=1805

Does anyone happen to know what happened to Lambert Percussion? They seemed to have cancelled the remainder of their season and dropped from the PSW world championships schedule.

If you're coming to Dayton this weekend, prepare for rain and falling temps. Bring lots of tarps to cover the gear.

I'm not a percussionist and I'm not at all qualified to judge the musical side of indoor percussion. But, for what it's worth, and based purely on my enjoyment of the show:
Pulling for MCM and X in PIW. Usually I'm a big fan, but a little disappointed in Pulse's show this year just in that it's 'samey samey' from them. George Mason is a ton of fun, really crowd pleasing. I admire the ambition of Matrix's show design... just so much going on... but I'm not sure it quite gels.
In PSW, Chino Hills show about how hard it is to be Chino Hills... well, I like that they're playing Shofukan, I suppose. My faves are Dartmouth being Dartmouth and just radically entertaining and Ayala being Ayala and really weird and experimental.
Again, I don't know from drumming, so my predictions are worthless--I can hear clean vs dirty, but not 'really clean' vs 'stupid, crazy clean'--but these are the shows I'll illegally screencapture and watch later think about for some time to come.

Although I know nothing on the percussion end of things, as far as entertainment goes I love Dartmouth's show & theme!

AYALA!!!! I can't remember ever saying the words "that high school drumline moves better than most colorguards"... Their body control is INSANE!!
Even in the absence of Ike Jackson, it seems they're still working out all the time lol
