LOL I happen to agree with you I don't disagree with anyone that dislikes Vista Murrieta's show; I can see how their show may feel trite. But when I ask myself which moments from tonight stick out? I can't get over VM's basses spaced across the entire front sideline doing that visual ostinato side to side while hitting their drums with their hands. The environmental demand of that moment was INSANE. It was so patiently long with little room for error. It required so much muscle to stay steady that long. And yet, if you weren't paying attention, it would be so easy to miss the risk of their demand and the value of all their exertion. I find that fragility really moving, especially when executed by high schoolers.

Fun facts:
Both groups lining up seeded first have the same design team Both groups lining up seeded fourth have the same design team Both groups lining up seeded fifth have the most world class appearances in their class (27 and 23)

Way to go Ayala! That show will be looked back on for years to come as a real masterpiece.
I really feel for RCC. Giff Howarth was really the one deciding factor between them and Pulse. It's actually kind of crazy how big of a spread he had between the two. They had them beat in three of four captions, and Giff came in with a 0.8 difference. Yikes.

Honestly the way that arena exploded in cheer when Chino Hills was announced 2nd really made me happy for Ayala. They killed it!

One heck of an event this weekend. I enjoyed hearing small tweaks throughout the weekend for various groups.
Surprised by scholastic results. Thought CH was going to run with it

This is what makes me scratch my head. As a WORLD CLASS ensemble, what is so innovative about this show that has it ranked above Rhythm X, RCC, or Broken City? What are the World Class effects? Are their beats just that much more impressive than any other groups'? (Legitimate questions here as a non-percussionist) Honestly, you kind of just touched upon one of the reasons why I started falling out of love with this activity the past several years. Not specifically Pulse, but the general approach to the activity by so many groups (but fine, maybe they, along with a few others, are one of the reasons why...). Some have brought that artistry and fresh approach to the activity (Broken City), but their brand is then diluted over time as they also begin sticking to a formula and influencing other groups to do the same. I find myself having trouble gathering a complete thought on the matter, but I'll try... The short answer is that some groups know how to play the game so well that their programs become formulaic, predictable, and, in my opinion, a bit milquetoast when it comes to theme. The risk taking and innovation doesn't come in the full package, it comes in the beats. If you write a seemingly impossible book and it's executed with clarity, that's enough of a risk payoff. Rarely, a group will come along that may not be the best playing ensemble, but their show is written in a way that transcends the activity from its mere "drums in a gym" roots (I see you, Avon 2022... I see you). For a lot of people the difficulty in content on its own is enough to fully enjoy the show, and the artistry from a thematic perspective can take a backseat. That's why drummers love the lot so much. Sometimes they just want to see and hear some insane beats, and that's why Pulse has such a huge following in the lot year after year. Lots of people couldn't care less about themes or music choices, as long as the snareline is playing a solo for 16 measures filled with inverted cheeses, book reports and insanely fast singles, and the bassline is playing hand-to-hands at 220bpm. It's impressive, but it's such a... I don't know... mathematical (?) way to enjoy the activity (it makes sense in my head, I swear). I've thought so much about this over the years for the very reason you mentioned. Why am I having such a hard time seeing certain groups like Pulse continuing to push the boundaries of upper box 5 while others are coming to Dayton with such fresh perspectives and not achieving as high? What's so innovative about their shows? I had to start thinking of it from a sum of the parts perspective. Everything they do is insanely deliberate. Their shows are always one complete thought in every sense. They walk the line perfectly between continuity/cohesion and variety, but the variety doesn't come from different musical styles, it comes in the form of time signatures/key changes, metric modulation (peep the snare solo's flam-flams transitioning into swissies somehow being played with INSANE clarity that most other groups could never achieve), range of dynamics/timbres along with depth of their front ensemble writing (watch how many mallet changes the keyboards make throughout the show, how the timpani writing provides both a rhythmic and tonal foundation for the marimbas during permutation passages, how the metals provide so much color, how they play as a true ensemble while the mallets rhythmically mirror what the snares play as opposed to just backing off and letting them have a solo, etc.). The actual composition and construction of their shows is insanely good, even if I find myself having a hard time enjoying it as I tend to connect with shows on a more emotional or personal level (hence why groups like Infinity both this year and last year have resonated with me). Ayala's 2017 show encapsulates my feelings about this activity perfectly. It's worth the seven minutes of your life, I promise. Alright, I'll go ahead and step off that soapbox that nobody asked me to get on Preach it.

What an INSANE night of talent. This year was so good that I might have to shell out the $$$ to go see this live next year. I really agree with the overall neighborhoods that the judges have implied amongst the IW groups. I might do some scrambling within Scholastic World though: 1. Ayala 2. Vista Murrieta 3. Avon 4. Chino Hills 5. Center Grove 6. Cy-Fair 7. Broken Arrow 8. Dartmouth 9. Clear Brook 10. Burleson Centennial 11. Sparkman 12. Arcadia 13. Boswell 14. Franklin Central 15. Petal (I definitely weigh a show’s effect plan and performance energy above everything else. Maybe that explains any head-scratching choices…) Well, Vista was 2nd in Effect-Visual and 1st in Visual... so, at least from what I was prioritizing, I wasn't too far off

Can anyone tell me what happened with Infinity? WGI put out a statement and they’ve placed Infinity on probation for the next two seasons for their “conduct” at Worlds awards, but I’m not sure exactly what went down.

WGI put out a statement and they’ve placed Infinity on probation for the next two seasons for their “conduct” at Worlds awards, but I’m not sure exactly what went down. I've heard a few different things, but it sounds like they were being rude and making unnecessary comments to other organizations they beat, some were (supposedly) drunk at retreat and they brought an air mattress to retreat as well which was very disruptive Poor sportsmanship and rowdiness seem to be the prime reasons for their probation

INFINITY OVER MCM AND THE CROWD'S GOING WILD (AND SO AM I) sounds like maybe Infinity went a little TOO wild at retreat. 🤣😅😬
