This is a little incorrect. I believe there was a mess up on the website with this show. I think some bands are in the wrong order, and I know for sure that the times are off. I'm in the Forest Hills band, so I know that we perform at 6:30 pm this day. Awards are at 7:15. It may be the case that OMEA messed up some of the other shows too, but I know Norwood is wrong for sure. Norwood H.S., 9/16/20235:00 p.m. -- Lynchburg Clay H.S. (C) 5:15 p.m. -- Carlisle H.S. From a very…innocent perspective, I’m so, so glad OMEA is finally getting changes made and becoming more modern with scoring and organization (looking at you, updated website!) From a less innocent perspective… WOW it took a concerning amount of time for them to finally catch on 😅

So, for instance, there was a link on OMEA's schedule for a 9/23/23 show that was coming up as 403 error earlier this week. The reason was that the director had yet to upload a schedule. (But he has now.)

Checking some calendars showed me some things that made me sad. I believe that Coventry has dropped competitions and Finneytown has stopped attending OMEA events.
On a happier note, it seems like Sylvania Southview enjoyed their competitive debut last year, and they'll be attending two OMEA shows (Springfield and Maumee) this year, with a possible state appearance blocked off.

OMEA has made great strides lately and I don’t think it’s a big stretch to suggest that the judging bands receive in OMEA is as good or better than what they get in MSBA. The problem OMEA runs into is they run so many shows that their judging pool gets stretched pretty thin but they’ve cut their panel down by 2 judges recently so that has helped.

On a happier note, it seems like Sylvania Southview enjoyed their competitive debut last year, and they'll be attending two OMEA shows (Springfield and Maumee) this year, with a possible state appearance blocked off. This would not be the first season that Finneytown skipped OMEA. So they could come back. That is a shame about Coventry. They hadn't been competing very long, only since about 2017 or so, after a long gap dating back to the mid-1980s. I hope another 30 years doesn't pass before they try again. Glad to hear about Sylvania. I'm planning to attend the Springfield show (after going to BOA Toledo prelims that morning), so I should get to see them. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - As for OMEA vs. MSBA, any given pool of bands would be ranked against each other about the same in both circuits. If anything, OMEA is probably a little more consistent. For lower-ranking bands, OMEA is more consistent even than BOA, because BOA sheets are designed to make fine distinctions at the highest level; what happens below 70 points doesn't seem to matter very much to BOA. And to be fair to BOA: that's a perfectly acceptable approach based on the caliber of bands they need to adjudicate.

Attending the Louisville OMEA show today, and I noticed St. Edward marches flugelhorns in place of mellophones. I’ve never seen that before, but it worked! They were very strong.

Interesting to see a caption for class A won from last place. Also interesting to see Norton get a II. According to the recap, Norton got a 1. Heard they were under time by two seconds. Therefore they can’t qualify. Yeah, sucks to be Norton tonight. While I thought they deserved second not first (where has tonight's version of St. Ed's been hiding these past many years?), I also thought they had added just enough material to meet the timing requirement. I didn't have a stopwatch, but my notes say they "probably got to more than six minutes." They had some long pauses between movements, and marked time for the last minute or so. When they weren't announced as a state qualifier, I wondered how short they fell on time. Just two seconds?! Ouch. This was a very interesting evening. Hope to say more later.

Before we heard the results announced, I told some Hoover parents sitting next to me that (1) all the AA were likely to qualify and (2) that while I personally don't care much for the style of Hoover's show, the judges probably had them in first place by a point. As soon as St. Clairsville was announced as qualifying, I knew I'd be right about the first prediction. (Almost all these scores seem a little high to me. Although for St. Edward, I wrote "82 -- or higher?") By then, I had already been proved wrong on the second prediction, but the fact that Hoover took music and visual was of some comfort. I'm a bit surprised that Nordonia was three points back of Brunswick. I take it the two-second timing deduction that prevented Norton from qualifying isn't in Competition Suite?

I am wondering if you meant Morgan instead of Meigs (or if the schedule meant Meigs instead of Morgan).

I understand you are not a fan of the more BOA designed shows that Hoover, Brunswick and Norton produce I like Brunswick's show just fine, but I didn't think they were clean enough last night. What I don't like is narration, and especially prerecorded narration. I'll tolerate it if the show is otherwise really really good (e.g., Bluecoats 2022) or used rhythmically (e.g., Bluecoats 2015 and Bluecoats 2023), but too often a band will cover up the music with chatter. I am tolerating it from Copley this year (it helps that the famous voice they're using has a cadence that is almost musical in itself). And from "Gifts, simple gifts, we hold these truths, etc." in 2014 on, I have regularly tolerated it from Norton, and I have generally rated their their shows reasonably highly despite this flaw (I even told Tom Chiera in person after Norton got a II at the 2021 Akron show that they should have received a I for their narration-heavy production, and as I noted here that year, unlike OMEA's judges, I thought Norton should have (barely) earned a I at state finals) -- but it pleases me that Norton's best show in the past ten years (and the judges seemed to agree) was one that didn't have narration. Among northeast Ohio bands, Firestone has been particularly egregious in this regard. Hoover's show this year is set up on the Firestone model. (But I still thought it should get the highest score yesterday.)

Hopefully it gets sorted out before the Buckeye Invitational So what is the hangup? Depending on the piece and who holds the rights it's not something that usually resolves quickly. Otherwise it's "change a few chords and melodies" and call it an original piece.

I am hopeful that by the time I see the band this season they're able to put on the program that they originally desired.

It's not on OMEA's site yet, but Ohio State University today posted the schedule for the Buckeye Invitational on Oct. 14, 2023, featuring 44 high school bands and one college band. As is usual at this event, there are no breaks, but each block of bands in OMEA adjudication -- 31 this year -- alternates with a block of bands in festival performance, of which there will be 13 next month. (The festival bands tend to get larger over the course of the day.) Bands are from Ohio unless otherwise noted as such, and for the first time I can recall, there are two out-of-state bands at this event. Class C10:00 a.m. -- Fort Recovery H.S. 10:15 a.m. -- Ada H.S. 10:30 a.m. -- East Clinton H.S. 10:45 a.m. -- Arcadia H.S. 11:00 a.m. -- Crooksville H.S. Festival11:15 a.m. -- Elgin H.S. Another competition band lost? Elgin did once qualify for OMEA state finals in 1983, where they received a rating of III in Class B. I don't know how consistently they competed since then. I don't think they competed in 2014-2016. They seem to have competed once or twice in 2017, once or twice in 2018, and a few times each year in 2019, 2021, and 2022. After five years of not qualifying for state, maybe they decided it wasn't worth trying any longer.
