Beavercreek is currently still working out the copyright issues with the last 2 pieces of music of their show I judge for Central States and can't wait to see this program. More importantly, I hope that the students are able to perform what is prepared for them. It would be a shame to have make changes at this point in time.

Another band in the same district is Thomas Worthington HS and they have a pretty average marching band that I'm pretty sure only does OMEA unlike Worthington Kilbourne which does both OMEA and BOA. Depends on how average is defined. Among Ohio's 200+ competing bands, Thomas Worthington is probably in the top 25%.

If Thomas Worthington was to go into BOA they'd be pretty average

If Thomas Worthington was to go into BOA they'd be pretty average Could be. What does pretty average mean to you? For example, if I add up the scores of all 99 bands at Prelims in last years' Grand Nationals, drop the highest and the lowest and divide by 97 bands, I get an average of 76.48. Worthington Kilbourne's score at last year's Prelims was 76.18. Does that mean that Kilbourne is a hair below average, i.e., that pretty average Thomas Worthington would outscore them by three tenths?

(And for what's it's worth, I think Thomas Worthington's shows of the past five years or so would score in the 68-71 range at Grand Nationals, although I also think a number of bands in their general range were overscored at Grand Nationals the last two years when compared with comparable bands earlier in the past decade (e.g., if Nordonia's 2014 show is a 71.6, then no way is Springboro's 2022 show a 72.5.) With one exception, I felt that Thos. Worthington's shows from 2016 on were stronger than their shows through 2014, with 2015 as a turning point. I ranked them 28th out of 125 bands in OMEA state finals in 2021, between Licking Heights and Bloom-Carroll, and while I don't have my 2022 list near at hand, I think they were close to that last year, albeit remembering that Licking Heights was stronger and Bloom-Carroll was weaker than they each were the year before.)

Was worried for a while - trying to throw together a closer this late in the season without time to write it out or craft it to a higher level never turns out well (which is exactly why it never happens). Can’t wait to see Beavercreek for myself later this year!

(As a reminder: MSBA classifies based on band size not on school size.)
And of course, there's the Bands of America Columbus Regional at Obetz, OH, with Prelims starting at 8:15 a.m. (27 bands) and Finals starting at 7:30 p.m. (12 bands).
(As I mentioned before, I'll be attending the Obetz Prelims and heading to Logan Elm and thus will be able to see 40 different bands. I've split my day like that two or three times before. Usually there's been a band or two at the OMEA show who could qualify for finals at the BOA show, but I'll be (happily) surprised if that proves to be the case this weekend. If I were going to the Zanesville show, on the other hand, there are possibly three bands of whom any one of might sneak into the Obetz finals.)
*Prior to this season, Fairbanks had long competed in OMEA's Class C, for good reason: OHSAA had Fairbanks with 289 in grades 9-11 as of Oct. 31, 2021, the most recent date used to classify Ohio's high school for sports divisions. Maybe they've grown enough this year to be classified in OMEA's Class B (301-500 in grades 10-12), but there's no way Fairbanks is suddenly a Class A school. What's more, they weren't a particularly successful Class C band, having only qualified for state finals once, in 2009 (although I thought they deserved to qualify in 2015). And yet it's not a glitch: this is the second time this year they've been on a schedule as a Class A band, and they were scored as such two weeks ago at Hilliard. Maybe they have a new and ambitious director? I did see that OMEA had led a workshop this summer for small school bands, instructed by the directors of Ridgewood and Eastern Brown; perhaps that inspired Fairbanks.
**Sycamore was a regular participant in OMEA events for many years, performed at state finals every year from 1989 to 2012, and earned a Superior in all but three of those years (the exceptions were in the mid-1990s). Since then, they've participated in one or two OMEA events most years, I think, but didn't go to state finals even though they qualified. That included two appearances at the Buckeye Invitational in 2017, where they placed 7th (behind Grove City, Pickerington North, Lakota West, Beavercreek, Central Crossing, and Brunswick) and in 2019, where they placed 6th (behind William Mason [in a rare OMEA appearance for them], Grove City, Miamisburg, Beavercreek, and Kettering Fairmont). They also appeared at the Buckeye Invitational in 2021, but in the "Festival" class, even though what they presented was very much a competition style show. They appeared as "ratings only" at two other OMEA events that year, and at both local OMEA events and state finals in 2022 (and those ratings were inevitably Superior). But on the Wilmington schedule, it appears they're actually competing.
***A fairly long day for Springfield. It's 2 hrs. 40 min. from Holland to Carroll, where they'd be expected to arrive by 12:35 p.m. It's 2 hrs. 29 minutes from there to Perkins where they're due by 6:35 p.m. And it's 1 hr. 5 min. back to Holland after the awards conclude circa 8:50 p.m.

Looking ahead, I see that a "Claymont" is going to be attending the Cambridge OMEA show next weekend. I've never heard of them before. Paging N.E. Brigand to see if you know anything about this band. Don't know if you bought the program book at Louisville last week. Towards the back is a list of previous class champions at that event going back to 1983, featuring lots of bands who haven't competed for years, including Claymont, who won Class B there in 1988, 1989, and 1996. Another past class winner at Louisville is Chippewa, who won Class B in 2004. To my knowledge, the last time Chippewa competed was 2015. But I see they're on the schedule for the Norton competition on Oct. 7th. It was alumni from Chippewa who founded Rogues Hollow Regiment, first as a DCI Sound Sport ensemble and starting in 2021 as a DCA corps. Also on the schedule at Norton is "Northwest High School," listed as competing in Class B. Who is that? It can't be the Northwest from McDermott down in Scioto County: they're hosting their own show that day. It doesn't appear to be the Northwest H.S. from Cincinnati: they only appear in MSBA not OMEA, and their calendar doesn't show them with a performance that day. Norton has hosted out-of-state bands before. I saw Orchard Park from New York there in 2014. So maybe it's a Northwest H.S. from outside Ohio? I suppose "Northwest" could be a typo for "Northwestern," from Springfield, but that seems unlikely. Or could it be the Northwest H.S. in Canal Fulton? That's only 20 minutes from Norton. They haven't competed before, to my knowledge, and I can't find anything current about the band online. And if it is them, are they actually competing? In hopes of finding out, I've written to the email address on Norton's contest page asking for more information.

I assume Louisville has always done that, but this year was the first time I attended as a spectator and not as a band member.

I was also thinking it would be an out of state band because no city was listed and I remember competing against a West Seneca (NY) at Avon Lake in 2018, so out of state bands do occasionally appear this far north.

Ah, thanks for helping me to get this a little more clear in my head. I think I'm conflating different shows I saw and heard about. Maybe I was talking to Amherst parents about past shows in two different years. Looking at some notes, I think I actually attended that inaugural Avon Lake show, after having gone down to the Marietta show in the morning. I remember talking to someone about a show from a previous week where they forgot to announce state qualifiers: maybe that conversation was at Avon Lake about a different event. Anyway, for those who don't know, what happened at Avon Lake in 2018 was that West Seneca got disqualified for having driven a motorized vehicle on the field. (Right?) It looks like St. John's Jesuit has been competing since at least 2014. They were Class A in that year and 2015, and then Class AA in 2016-2018. I had seen video of them before, but first saw them in person at the Maumee show in 2016, which I attended after going to the BOA Toledo Prelims that morning. I thought they were likely to qualify for state finals that year, but it didn't happen until the next year, and then not again until 2019. By that time, they'd gotten a dispensation from OMEA to compete in a lower class. St. Edward gets the same dispensation. Both are boys-only Catholic schools, but both bands draw from some other girls-only Catholic schools. St. John's had been by far the smallest Class AA band for those three years.

Sycamore is currently scheduled to perform first at 5:15 at the Kettering Fairmont competition, and they are also scheduled to perform last at the Loveland competition at 6:45. That's a 38 mile trip between the two schools, so I'm very interested to see how this plays out.

But I'm only aware of one other case in the past ten years of what you're describing for Sycamore: on the last regular-season weekend in 2015, Buckeye (from Medina) performed in two evening competitions: early at the New Philadelphia show and late at the Brunswick show. I don't have the performance times, but those two venues are about 74 miles apart. And it was the right move: Buckeye had yet to qualify for state finals that year, and they didn't qualify at the New Philadelphia show, but they did qualify at Brunswick. In September 2019, there were two Ohio bands who theoretically could have performed three times in one day: both Walter E. Stebbins and Logan Elm played in the BOA Columbus Regional Prelims and then went to OMEA competitions later in the day. Stebbins drove 13 miles to OSU stadium for the Buckeye Invitational, and Logan Elm drove 20 miles to Pataskala for the contest at Watkins Memorial. Both of them (unsurprisingly) failed to advance to BOA finals, so they didn't get a third performance opportunity.

Stuck at work this evening, but hey, I see my alma mater's football game is being streamed on Youtube, so I can catch them performing their contest show at halftime. Ah, they're starting midshow and presenting their ballad, percussion feature, and closer -- the last of which I hadn't seen before (this is probably the first time they've performed it in public). Hey, that drill is a slow version of the Cavaliers' diamond cutter, neat. Just shy of two minutes, which means their total show clocks in at about 10 min. 15 sec. Still pretty dirty, and still a number of holes.
They're the visitors at this game. The home band is purely a halftime group (with half the guard on poms) about 20% their size, and their show, titled "Heavy Metal" features "Immigrant Song," "Enter Sandman," and "Iron Man." And then there's a capper with some guest performers (not clear on where they're came from) playing, as the announcer says, "the classic 'Hey' song." This of course means part 2 of Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll," but Glitter's name is naturally anathema. (Huh. Wikipedia says "Rock and Roll, Part 1" was the hit side in France.)
But for both bands, the overall impression was like hearing them underwater. The video sound was terrible.

This is a little random, but I watched a video of Worthington Kilbourne's show the other day and I think they have a genuinely good chance of moving themselves up the Ohio rankings. There's some good challenges for the brass on hits and especially on features that you can hear is really pushing them. More importantly though, I just really like the show this year. The soundscape is fascinating. The pit does a wonderful job with keeping this dreamy atmosphere. Visual effect is also pretty cool, they have some nice staging. I did struggle to find the soloists sometimes but overall solid! Super moved by this show it's lovely. Anyway that's it.

These are the OMEA and MSBA schedules for this Saturday, September 13, 2023. All bands are from Ohio unless otherwise noted: [...] (As I mentioned before, I'll be attending the Obetz Prelims and heading to Logan Elm and thus will be able to see 40 different bands. I've split my day like that two or three times before. Usually there's been a band or two at the OMEA show who could qualify for finals at the BOA show, but I'll be (happily) surprised if that proves to be the case this weekend. If I were going to the Zanesville show, on the other hand, there are possibly three bands of whom any one of might sneak into the Obetz finals.) Just got home. Had to pull into a truck stop near Lexington for an hour's nap; I was fading fast. Haven't checked to the Obetz results yet. I left there after Lakota West's prelims performance (I assume they also got a finals performance, since they seemed clearly the best band I'd seen perform to that point, but I don't actually know that yet) in order to catch all the bands at Logan Elm. I still missed the first one there. These were the announced results. Very curious to know what the scores were: 27th Annual Logan Elm Marching Band Classic (Sep. 23, 2023)Class C1. Valley - also percussion2. Fort Frye - also guardClass B1. Gallia Academy - also percussion2. Liberty Benton 3. Circleville - also guard4. Southeastern 5. Westfall Logan Elim (host; ratings only) - IClass B/C combinedMusic -- Gallia Academy Visual -- Southeastern G.E. -- Gallia Academy B/C Grand Champion -- Gallia Academy Class A1. Eastern Brown - also percussion & guard - I2. Franklin Heights - I3. Athens Class AA1. Middletown - also guard - I2. Olentangy Liberty - also percussion - IClass AA/A combinedMusic -- Olentangy Liberty Visual -- Middletown G.E. -- Middletown AA/A Grand Champion -- Middletown With the possible exception of Logan Elm (but it was a close call), I thought all the bands who received a Superior deserved it (and no band who failed to qualify deserved to do so today, but a few of them do have the shows and talent to get there over the next four weeks) and I have no quibbles with the rankings. Based on school size, Eastern Brown is still Class C, by the way. And in my opinion, admittedly having missed a few BOA performance, the top three shows here would beat several bands at Obetz, and Middletown conceivably could have qualified for Finals there.

What you're describing sounds similar in design... which means I can't wait to see show!!

OMEA has posted the first iteration of their state finals schedule, accessible from any of the 4 entries for OMEA SMBF on the website calendar. It does not yet include any of the qualifiers from yesterday. I see that Berne Union will be attending state in class AA again.
Also, checking schedules for 10/7, I see "River Valley" from Bidwell on the schedule at Teays Valley. Anyone know about this band?
Also also, I see that Sycamore has a pretty tight schedule on this day. 5:15 PM at Kettering Fairmont, then 6:45 PM at Loveland.

Sycamore's Oct. 7th schedule was also noted by ohioguy2 a few posts back. Yesterday I mentioned it to someone from Athens H.S., who said that some years ago, Athens had once made it to three competitions in one day. River Valley H.S. of Bidwell (in Gallia County) appeared at two to three southern Ohio competitions for most of the 2010s. I've never seen them perform, but it's good to know they're still going. A different River Valley H.S., from Caledonia in Marion County (north central Ohio), also competed for a year or two in the mid-2010s. I saw them once at Perkins.
