Anyone know how tall Bixby’s bridge is? Just out of curiosity. It's a roller coaster lol. I know the larger one is around 8 feet tall, but not sure if that's from the standing surface or railing. Apparently, judges in STL were also calling the props "bridges." I'm wondering if that had to do with the lower visual GE score. The music and vinyl props do a pretty good job conveying that the show takes place in or has to do with an amusement park, IMO.

I didn’t get the theme park vibe initially, but I can definitely see it now looking back! I was asking because I’ve seen bands get penalized before for being over 12ft. I’m not great at math, though, so I all I knew is that it was tall! Regardless, that was a fantastic show, and I really enjoyed watching it. The kid in the cape is a great performer!

BOA's rule is any platform that a band member stands on that is 6 feet tall or greater must include some sort of safety railing, I think.

Very proud of Mustang. I knew they could compete with the Tulsa bands and they should be ecstatic for doing as well as they did. Stillwater and their’s show were my favorites of the night. After making semis at GN recently and continuing to improve with this years performance I’m wondering if Mustang will pull a Jenks and be the next OK band that can make the leap into GN Finals.

On less than four hours' sleep followed by a two-hour drive, I saw 40 of 42 bands at the first day of OMEA state finals today (and will see the next 29 tomorrow and the final 59, I hope, next weekend). So I'm too tired to write much, but I did want to do a shout out to Nordonia. When I checked the forecast this morning, there was nothing about precipitation: just cold and breezy. But starting late afternoon, a few bands (and those of us in the audience) had some light sprinkles. Then it returned, but steadier, in the last movement of Thomas Worthington's show. It stopped as Nordonia set up, and then just as they started playing, suddenly there was a pretty thorough drenching *and* a very strong wind that got under their large tarp -- which is weighted down! -- and started ballooning it and whipping it around. About 20 parents ran out to tackle it and then drag it off the field, and as they did, it was just spraying water onto the field. But the band kept on trucking, and apart from some soloists whose microphones started to short out, they gave their best performance of the year while getting soaked through and blown around. Very impressive.
And then the rain was done for the day within two minutes after they finished.

James Madison takes another win over Bassett. The results of this seem to suggest that the VMBC circuit is trying to reward small bands (such as Princess Anne and Cox) just as much as they are bigger bands (like Westfield and Freedom).

I have high hopes for them in the future.
Lake Orion (pronounced ore - ee - un) in a solid 2nd and ahead of Plymouth was also a little surprising (they are just really good this year).
With Walled Lake Central down in Flight two this year, it made for an exciting show off with Jenison. Jenison pulled off the victory. They have been having a great season.
This is the third year in a row that all of the state champions in each flight have been from the west side of the state.

However Wando’s attention to detail person to person is just unmatched. Their sound is extremely refined and rhythmic accuracy very high with complex music on the move. I do after seeing Byrnes i think that they could make a run for GN finals. They play well but it’s still a little crass and visually I think the demand is weaker. But that said it’s a very clean show at this point, cleaner than probably anything they’ve ever put out. Summerville definitely has the best guard in the state. Wando’s guard seemed rather dirty this year.

Congrats to all the champions! Some little tidbits Rockford should be safely in the middle 22 in Indy and probably in the top 15-20 once again Jenison is by no means a lock for Semis, especially being in the same panel as Marian and North Hardin, but they keep putting themselves further and further on the right side of the bubble Wow PCEP. Could we be talking about them as a possible semis bubble? I have not seen them this year, but hopefully they can get cleaned up!! Good luck to all Michigan bands in Indy!

Next year could be the year for them to finally take the reins with Wando splitting. I doubt Wando has too much of a dip in quality or for very long though.

If Byrnes takes it ever against Wando head to head it will be in the next few years. Wando will likely not go to state next year if they continue their pattern.

I was there last night and while I do not think Byrnes should have won, I do think they should have been closer in score with Wando and they deserved G.E. caption Byrnes has an entertaining and crowd pleasing show and I think that accounts for audience reaction during placement announcements Personally, I found Wandos show to be on the sleepy side. But there is no denying their superior musicianship and rich sound. And Byrnes, though their show was entertaining, I feel it tread the line of being cheesy and gimmicky. Like when their band director was at boiling springs and their shows had high entertainment factor but fell short. I fear the same thing at Byrnes As mentioned, Wando wins 5A every time it competes and they have several advantages from school size and from a socio economic point of view being in a rich suburb of Charleston. Byrnes did not bring enough to the table show design wise and musically to compel the judges to place them first over Wando. When Wando competes in the 5A State Championship, people need to understand that they will win and all the drama is in who will come in 2nd. Wando deserved that win last night Only quibble I had with placements is that I though Clover was better than 6th place

That show was about 15 years outdated and they had less drill than anyone. They stood still for what seemed like most of the show. Visually very dirty by the members. They were the loudest but with at best an average band sound. Wish we could have met up😀 ... I was the one on the 45 stuffing jelly beans in my face 🤣😭

For example, Jenison was at 93.475, which is a raw score of 86.95 Scores are comparable across classes for the most part. The flights do perform separately, but use the same group of judges, just shake them up to different captions for each flight. They aren’t perfectly comparable, but are pretty close

The Mid-States Band Association will host its annual Championship event this Saturday. New this year is that for the first time, MSBA will be hosting each of their five classes at a different site. Class A will be at Simon Kenton, AA at Miamisburg, AAA at West Clermont, AAAA at Kings, and Open Class at Mason.
The Open Class lineup might be the best lineup MSBA has had in many years. Centerville and Milford are attending for the first time in many years, and with them, Mason, Lakota West, and Miamisburg, you have arguably the best five Ohio bands attending Grand Nationals as the last five bands performing here. It should be a great event for anyone planning to attend.
The Open Class lineup is as follows:
East Central 5:00 Fairfield 5:15 Sycamore 5:30 Forest Hills 5:45
Worthington Kilbourne 6:15 Oak Hills 6:30 Lakota West 6:45 William Mason 7:00
Miamisburg 7:45 Milford 8:00 Centerville 8:15

On less than four hours' sleep followed by a two-hour drive, I saw 40 of 42 bands at the first day of OMEA state finals today (and will see the next 29 tomorrow and the final 59, I hope, next weekend). So I'm too tired to write much, but I did want to do a shout out to Nordonia. When I checked the forecast this morning, there was nothing about precipitation: just cold and breezy. For the second day, it wan't too cold, but the wind was biting. The big surprise for me was how good Walnut Hills was. I've always enjoyed their offbeat shows, but this was the best I've seen them.

What y’all think about summerville at state? I thought they did great! Better than last year for sure but 2016 will be my favorite show of theirs probably for a long time.

Wando is awesome but on the boring side! Summerville was great! James F Byrnes had the most entertaining show by far! Was really surprised they didn't at least take a caption from Wando. I too thought the score gap should have been much closer. Some if the other placements were a bit weird too but who knows. I was surprised at the improvement by Dorman, saw them earlier this season and the amount of improvement was astounding. I will that not one person in the stands Saturday night, other than Wando fans and people who really follow marching band, thought Wando had it. There was an audible gasp when Byrnes was announced in 2nd place. Every person near me was from Dorman and Boiling Springs and they were all convinced this was the year Byrnes took it. I myself no longer have a kid in any band but if I did, I'd want them at Byrnes with Mr. Bone. They may not be the best in the state but those Byrnes kids sure do seem to have fun and isn't that what it should be?

Like scband said before Wando will win because they truly are technically the best. This has always been what Wando is about and for years there have been louder bands with more fun shows that everyone thinks will win or do well and it just never happens. Fun does not equal technically good. Wando puts the most kids in all state year after year, they’re going to Midwest for the second time, Byrnes isn’t quite near that level of refinement and that’s just the way it is at the moment

Of course they have more all state. They are twice the size of most of the big schools like Byrnes or Boiling Springs. I find it curious that their marching band is same size as Byrnes. I wonder if they limit what band students get in. Most schools let all band students march that want to, right?
