Yes - Mason is very very good. Should be top half at GN finals. Centerville has a shot at finals. Part of the group of 10 bands looking for 3 spots. If Mason is that good, why did my granddaughter fall asleep during their opener? 🤓 Because she's 3 and had a long day. *eyeroll

Little one snuggled in between Gramps and a blanket and nodded right off. Past bedtime in the fresh air will do that.

Drove for some eight hours today on very little sleep so that I could attend the Athens and Dublin Jerome competitions. Worth it. But too tired to say more now. Athens H.S., Ohio -- 45th Athens Invitational Marching Festival (OMEA)
Class C 1. Nelsonville-York Class B 1. Maysville Class A 1. Meigs Athens [ratings only] Class AA 1. Pickerington North -- Music, Visual, G.E., Guard, Percussion, I, grand champion 2. Hilliard Darby -- I 3. Westerville South -- I [4.] Lancaster -- I [5.] Groveport Madison Dublin Jerome H.S., Ohio -- 6th Annual Dublin Band Showcase (OMEA)Class C 1. Madison-Plains 2. Northridge 3. Arcadia Class B 1. Bloom-Carroll -- I 2. John Glenn 3. Meadowbrook Class A 1. Marion Harding -- I 2. Portsmouth West -- I Class AA 1. Pickerington North -- Music, G.E., Percussion, I, grand champion 2. Worthington Kilbourne -- Visual, Guard, I 3. Central Crossing -- I Hilliard Davidson -- I Lancaster -- I Licking Heights -- I Marysville -- I Dublin Scioto [ratings only] -- I Dublin Coffman [ratings only] -- I Dublin Jerome [ratings only] -- I I thought the judges at both Athens and Jerome were too tough, and that five more bands should have qualified. (And at this rate, there are going to be shockingly few Class C bands at state finals. Edit: More C bands have qualified than I realized: 8 so far, including one band who has never before qualified. The average over the past five years is 15 and there is one more weekend for them to do so.) I also disagreed with the Jerome judges about Class AA order (only the top three were announced, so I put the others in alphabetical order) -- other than Pickerington, the clear winner. That said, I have something of an allergic reaction to the kind of show Kilbourne presented, which may be coloring my judgement. Taking all the performances I saw, even those by bands who weren't competing, here's how I'd have ranked them: Pickerington North (evening performance) Pickerington North (afternoon performance) Hilliard Darby - - - - - gap - - - - - Licking Heights Dublin Coffman (yes I know they beat Licking Heights earlier in the day) Dublin Jerome Worthington Kilbourne Hilliard Davidson Marysville Dublin Scioto Central Crossing - - - - - - gap - - - - - Marion Harding Portsmouth West Westerville South Bloom-Carroll Madison-Plains Lancaster (afternoon performance) - - - - - gap - - - - - Northridge Athens Lancaster (evening performance) Arcadia Meigs - - - - - I vs. II cutoff (= approx. 60-62 in BOA) - - - - - Groveport Madison John Glenn Maysville Meadowbrook Nelsonville-York All in all, a wonderful day of band. Lots of highlights, but three in particular I'd note are Hilliard Davidson's tuba solo, Portsmouth West's EWI solo, and Dublin Jerome's take on "With a Little Help from my Friends".

How is Paul Lawrence Dunbar these days? Dunbar is not well. They're down to 100 or so and are not marching a drum line this year. They made finals at state last year but appear to have taken a big step back this year. Although I listed them among first out because they appear to be improving, it's possible they could finish 7th or 8th in a class that is fairly weak after the top 3, imo.

Here's one I attended tonight: 29th Annual Art in Motion -- Norton H.S., Ohio (OMEA) [...] Class AA 4. Brunswick -- I Brunswick's show, "Emblems of Liberty!", is challenging show but far from clean. They open with Morton Gould's "American Salute", and I found it impossible not to think of Broken Arrow last year and Grove City the year before. I was sorry to learn that their director of many years, Jay Wardeska, is on a medical leave of absence. So this turns out to have been a euphemism from the quick-thinking parent I spoke with at Norton. Turns out the director was suspended in August pending a district examination into his texts and other interactions with students, which may have violated school policy but which, per local media reports (that I obviously missed at the time), have not resulted in any criminal investigation.

The last OMEA weekend looks to be a soggy mess, with 100% chance of rain at every show. I'm thinking it's not going to be worthwhile to drive more than two hours to Newark early tomorrow, as I had intended, only to sit for hours in the rain and maybe find the show was cancelled. But if shows are cancelled, there'll be a lot fewer bands in OMEA state finals this year than there has been in a long time. Tomorrow is the last chance for a lot of bands to qualify. Hmm.

(With retractable roofs, of course, for nice days.) My DREAM is to have one dedicated indoor marching arts facility for everyone deep in the Colorado Rockies, rotating DCI, BOA, & WGI through the facilities. Of course, said billionaire you mentioned also includes stipends for the top bands to travel to this new GN facility every year, and its a true top-of-the-activity contest.

I will not post the MCBA scores for the weekend of 10/26. Most of the bands had to compete indoors in music only judged competition. The pouring rain, cold and wind affected all of the Michigan competitions Saturday. Luckily the state championships next weekend will be held at Ford Field; an indoor stadium.

Hmm. My original plan had been to attend two OMEA shows today, but the weather meant that would have me not only driving for 5+ hours but sitting in the rain for 10+ hours. So instead I just went to this show, driving a total of only 3 hours and sitting in the rain for just 5 hours. And it rained pretty much the whole time, with just two short breaks. This is the last week of the regular season in OMEA, with a number of long-running competitions typically drawing a large number of bands. It looks like most of the ten shows scheduled for today had sixteen or more bands each in their lineups (I couldn't find the lineup for the Tecumseh show). For the weaker bands, meaning generally the smaller schools, it's the last chance to qualify for state finals. For the better bands, who have already qualified, it's a moment to show off and try to nab some trophies and bragging rights. The show I attended had eighteen bands scheduled, but three of them called off, presumably due to weather and because (a) they had already qualified and (b) they were unlikely to win any major trophies. Fortunately the weather though very wet wasn't storming, so this show otherwise went off without a hitch. I hope most of the other competitions today also did. The risk would be natural fields becoming waterlogged. 44th Annual Field Competition -- New Philadelphia, OH (OMEA)Class C 1. Union Local - I 2. Belpre 3. Crestview 4. Waterloo 5. East Canton 6. Fort Frye Class B 1. Indian Valley - I 2. Meadowbrook - I Class A 1. Louisville - I 2. Marlington - I Class AA 1. Hilliard Davidson (tie) - I - G.E., Music, Percussion 1. Nordonia (tie) - I - Guard 3. Pickerington Central - I - Visual (and esprit de corps) 4. Firestone - I This time I think the judges got it right. I couldn't decide between Davidson and Nordonia, and was very pleasantly suprised that it was a tie, though I thought Nordonia would take Music. Davidson's Visual scores obviously kept them from winning outright. Meadowbrook cleaned up a lot from the previous week at Jerome, where I thought they had little chance of qualifying for state this year. And Marlington has a nifty Rube Goldberg trick at the end that finally made sense. Also they performed during the heaviest rain. Maybe their best show since returning to competition a few years ago. Indian Valley would only score about a 60 in BOA (and this is their first time qualifying for state in 12 years), but I still want them to attend a BOA event, just so I can hear the announcer try to pronounce the town they're from: Gnadenhutten. If you know German pronunciation, forget it! It will do you no good. It's pronounced "juh-NAY-den-hutt-en". Finally, has anyone here ever been to New Philadelphia's stadium? From the home side, there is a lovely view behind the visitor's stands of a picturesque park with a large pond in which a fountain is spouting. But what really caught my attention is the seating behind the end zone for the N.P. band: it's a big band shell, with three walls and a roof. I've never seen anything like it before.

Some of the numbers management is the absolute worst I’ve ever seen. One judge in Class A had 9 sub-caption ties, and another judge in Class AAAA had 6 sub-caption ties, among others. Let’s not even start with AAA... Why can KMEA never seem to get this right? More and more bands are deciding to compete in different circuits, like MSBA and more BOA, because of it. It’s just horrible. Laughable.

And before anybody says "You can't compare numbers between shows": either the numbers mean something or they don't -- and per the sheets, they do mean something.
