Olde English Festival of Bands Finals - Rock Hill District 3 stadium 1. Nation Ford HS 84.55 2. Easley HS 83.325 3. Ridgeview HS 82.00 4. Clover HS 80.69 5. Ardrey Kell HS 78.65 6. Powdersville HS 78.325 7. Hartsville HS 77.675 8. Andrew Jackson HS I've been waiting for a few years for Kell to break out and give the NC side of Charlotte metro a powerhouse. But maybe this is their ceiling. Kell has the numbers to be a powerhouse and DEFINITELY has the money. They just need the right people and the right culture. It could happen for them, it might not. Last year's 4th place finish and NC trophy win at WCU was a big step in the right direction. Its still early so we'll see how things turn out the rest of the season.

44th Annual Music in Motion (Louisville, OH -- Sep. 21, 2019 [OMEA]) Class AA (>900) 1. Hilliard Bradley -- Music, Visual, G.E., a, p, I, Grand Champion 2. Nordonia -- I 3. Hoover 4. Firestone Class A (501-900) 1. Lexington -- I 2. Revere -- a, p 3. Marlington Class B (301-500) 1. Crestwood -- a, p Class C (<300) 1. Union Local -- a 2. East Canton -- p 3. Crestview (The host band is judged for rating only -- and did not qualify this time.) I have some thoughts about this interesting competition, where the judges were basically right but much tougher than those at the event I attended last week, but I am too tired to add more now. The audience favorite was Hoover, and I compleely understand that sentiment. I would have had Hoover ahead of Nordonia primarily because Hoover's show is complete (but sloppy) while Nordonia only delivered about half of their production. That said, I would have given Nordonia best music. They're smaller than in previous years, but they sound good. Hilliard Bradley had the best overall package, and their show this year is much more audience friendly than last year's show. I was really pleased that the judges put Lexington over Revere. In all, it was a very promising evening. Even Firestone has a musically and visually interesting program ... except that they bury much of the sound in pointless voice-over material. By a stroke of good fortune, the sound was turned way down last night, but I fear what happens when they "fix" that. Based on Marion Harding having qualified for State at the show I attended a week earlier, I would have had six bands rather than three qualifing at this event, including Louisville, Hoover, and Revere.

Weekend of Sep 21, 2019 (Michigan Competing Band Association) In MCBA the reason scores are so high and close is that the base score is divided by 2 with 50 then added to it to arrive at final score.
Rockford Invitational
Flight 1 1. Hudsonville - 83.5 Exhibition. Rockford - 88.875
Flight 2 - None Participated
Flight 3 1. Byron Center - 85.275 2. Northview - 84.025 3. Cedar Springs - 78.850
Flight 4 1. Sparta - 81.800
Flight 5 1. Godwin Heights - 82.800 2. Comstock Park - 80.700 3. Newago - 79.775 4. Grant - 78.700
Lakeland Invitational
Flight 1 1. Clarkston - 79.625 2. West Bloomfield - 78.850 Exhibition. Lakeland - 82.20
Flight 2 *1. Walled Lake Central - 84.225 2. South Lyon - 81.450 3. Milford - 80.300 4. Flushing - 80.000
Flight 3 - None Participated
Flight 4
1. Ferndale - 82.100 2. Marysville - 77.725
Flight 5 - None Participated
*Walled Lake Central dropped from Flight 1 last year to Flight 2 this year. This was done to keep the number of bands in each flight balanced. I do not think they had much/if any drop in students, so they should still be Class 3A in BOA.

OMEA Results 9/21 [... that long list again ...] A few thoughts: from a snippet of video of the Hamilton show scores, I know that Loveland got best G.E. even though they didn't qualify. (Which may help to give a rough sense of scores there.) Interesting that Piqua didn't qualify at Tipp. Surprised to see Ross behind Bellefontaine. When was the last time Van Buren lost in its class? Marion Local has not been placing well so far this year: will they finally miss qualifying after 39 straight years? (That would leave just Troy and Newark with perfect records in that regard, since Perkins missed a couple years ago.) Is Springboro rebounding or is Marysville slipping? No qualifications at Bloom-Carroll or Cambridge? Ouch. Pretty notable that Central Crossing beat Dublin Jerome! Last year that would have seemed impossible. Kudos to Portsmouth West for qualifying so early. It's fascinating how the bands at those contests in the southern tip of the state, in this case the Rock Hill show, who are all small schools, regularly choose to compete in higher classes there but not at other events. (Also, for those who don't know: Russell and Point Pleasant are West Virginia schools.) That's different from a school like Berne Union, who is Class C by enrollment but who always competes in Class A or AA. That said, I don't see the point of B.U. and Canal Winchester both competing in AA at Pickerington when there were not AA schools competing at that event. (I saw video of Pick. Central's show: solid in their usual way. Haven't seen North's yet.)

And my favorite Central Crossing show, from 2016, was "4-Ground". Maybe I just like numbers?

Attended Panther Creek last night but had to leave before their exhibition. I'd say any fears of the demise of the Cary bands is overblown. Definitely a size change though, PC listed at 147, GH appears to be in the 130s and Cary 120.
Cary has Bellbrooks old director and it appears to be an upgrade as their show is a GE monster. In fact if say this is their best show in many years. Green Hope hasn't lost much of a beat, their show is nice, seemed unfinished. Cape Fear seems to have rebounded from a bit of a down season last year. I think they'll do well at their BOA.
I didn't see results, hopefully will be posted in a few days. I would be very surprised if this one doesn't go Cary then GH then Cape Fear. Green Hope probably superior in music but not enough to overcome the GE.

I'm going to use a few posts to share the announced results and a few thoughts about the Buckeye Invitational.
But first, let me randomly say that I'd like to make a donation to some worthy Ohio band booster organization; I just can't decide which one or how much.

So here's some good news: despite some earlier suggestions to the contrary, William Mason was judged at the Buckeye Invitational, an OMEA event. And they nearly cleaned up. (And the audience seemed to agree entirely with that.) But of course, members of the general public like myself don't know many details, because results at the Buckeye Invitational are even more opaque than they are at most OMEA shows. All that gets announced publicly are (1) which bands earned a Superior ("I") rating (qualifying them for State Finals, if they wish to attend) and (2) the winners of five captions in each of the four classes: Music, Visual, General Effect, Percussion, and Guard. Now, over the next week, if I closely examine a bunch of different bands' websites, Facebook pages, and Twitter feeds, I may be able to glean a few more details: various groups will mention how they placed. But for now, in performance order by class, these were all the bands appearing, the titles of their shows (I arrived just after Elgin started and am guessing about their title) and the awards they received:
Festival Exhibition Batavia - "Through the Decades" Brooklyn - [no title] Canfield - [no title] Westerville Central - [no title] Lakeview - "Sharp Dressed Band" Ontario - "The Music of Queen" Centennial - [no title] Sidney - "The Greatest Showman" Wadsworth - [no title] Massillon Washington - "The Avengers"
Class C Elgin - "The Music of Queen" [?] Black River - "Heartbeats" -- GENERAL EFFECT, GUARD Columbus Grove - "12-K: A Childhood Rewind" Blanchester - "Gladiators" Arcadia - "Into the Storm" Northridge - "The Raven" -- VISUAL, PERCUSSION Northeastern - "The Wall" Madison-Plains - "Through the Eyes of a Child" -- MUSIC -- I
Class B Shawnee - "Mummified" -- VISUAL, GENERAL EFFECT Wauseon - "11" Carlisle - "The Voices Inside" -- MUSIC, PERCUSSION Circleville - "Becoming Human" -- GUARD Clinton-Massie - "Flight"
Class A Stebbins - "The Path Chosen" -- GENERAL EFFECT -- I Springfield - "Gold! Gold! Gold!" Marietta - "Every Which Way" Ross - "Into the Darkness... Nevermore!" Copley - "A Lantern in the Window" -- MUSIC, VISUAL -- I Avon Lake - "American Heroes" -- PERCUSSION Big Walnut - "Piano Man: The Music of Billy Joel" St. Edward - "Descent into Madness" -- GUARD
Class AA Avon - "Rockstar" Perry - "Carpe Noctem" -- I Reynoldsburg - "From Dusk 'til Dawn" Middletown - "The Coven" -- I Walnut Hills - "It's About Time" - I Sycamore - "New Skin" -- I Pickerington Central - "One Small Step" -- I Kettering Fairmont - "And I Think to Myself..." -- I Hilliard Davidson - "The Monarchy" -- I Miamisburg - "The Promise of Spring" -- GUARD -- I Beavercreek - "Another Brick in the Road" -- I William Mason - "What Lies Beneath" -- MUSIC, VISUAL, GENERAL EFFECT, PERCUSSION -- I Grove City - "Rhapsodic Journey" -- I
Exhibition (host) Ohio State University - "Modern Movie Musicals"
- - - - - - - - - - So obviously Mason was first in their class, but we don't know the other placements. I have some thoughts about how I personally would have ranked and scored all the competing bands, but I'm too tired to write anymore now, except to say this:
In the five years I've been following marching bands closely, I've seen very few Grand National finalist-level bands live. But: --I saw Avon (IN) in 2017 at Canton on Sep. 16, eight weeks out from their third-place finish at Grand Nationals. --And I saw Mason in 2016 at Toledo on Oct. 1, six weeks out from their third-place finish at Grand Nationals.
Tonight's performance by Mason at OSU, seven weeks out from Grand Nationals, was markedly better than both of those

Most of us will be aware, but for those who don't know - Burg winning guard is NOT a surprise. I'd even say Mason taking the guard caption over Burg would be a surprise.
Miamisburg has had a top-tier guard for ages (long before their music and visual and design got good).
Yes, Mason has a Cartwright guard, and they're very good at what they do. But Miamisburg = incredibly strong auxiliary.

Panther Creek Invitational. I've been told Green Hope won over Cary. Cape Fear lost their class to a nonBOA band.
Cary's show may play better in BOA (this assumes my info above is correct in the first place).
A little surprised at the result but Green Hope does have a very mature sound and a pretty show that reminds me a bit of a Blue Knights show.

Thank you so much for posting this! This is how I would have ranked them:
Class AA 1. William Mason* ---big gap--- 2. Miamisburg* 3. Grove City* 4. Kettering Fairmont* ---small gap--- 5. Beavercreek* ---gap--- 6. Hilliard Davidson* 7. Sycamore* 8. Pickerington Central* ---small gap--- 9. Perry* 10. Reynoldsburg* 11. Middletown* 12. Walnut Hills* ---gap--- 13. Avon
Class A 1. Stebbins* ---small gap--- 2. St. Edward* 3. Copley 4. Avon Lake 5. Ross ---small gap---
6. Springfield ---gap--- 7. Big Walnut 8. Marietta
Class B 1. Shawnee ---gap---
2. Clinton-Massie 3. Circleville 4. Carlisle ---gap--- 5. Wauseon [Wauseon was listed as a Festival band in the program but they were announced as being judged by OMEA]
Class C 1. Northridge* 2. Madison-Plains* ---gap--- 3. Black River 4. Blanchester 5. Columbus Grove 6. Arcadia 7. Northeastern ---gap--- 8. Elgin
Great to know that the judges half-agreed with me on the order for the top two in Class C. As for Class AA, my head told me Grove City might be on top of Miamisburg on the strength of their music, but I went with my heart, being impressed by Miamisburg's visuals and g.e. and somewhat disappointed that Grove City cut back on their usual stylistic elements. It's fascinating to learn that Beavercreek's messy show came out ahead of Fairmont's much cleaner performance. I know there are bigger bands than Beavercreek (even in this competition, Mason might be bigger, and Fairmont must be close), but Beavercreek just felt enormous. After the tornado drill early in the performance, with about 160 people swirling around Dorothy, not counting the pit and the guard, suddenly a whole 'nother crowd of players emerges onto the field from behind the back screen and and I heard several audience members saying, "How did they hide all those people?" A quick count suggests they have about 210 brass and woodwinds, 20 in the battery, close to 30 in the pit, and perhaps 40 guard?
