I attended this one: 38th Annual North Coast Competition (Perkins H.S., Sandusky, OH -- OMEA) In each category, only the top two were announced. [...]Class AA 1. Kings -- Visual, Percussion -- I -- Grand Champion 2. Medina -- General Effect -- I (3. North Royalton ?) -- Music, Guard -- I (4. Mentor ?) -- I I think the judges blew it. Given the caption split, I presume the scores among the top three were *very* close, but to me and everyone I spoke to there, North Royalton and Medina were obviously better than Kings, who shouldn't have been in the mix based on that performance. Once North Royalton was announced as best music, I figured that sealed them for first, since that was their diciest major caption. Interesting. Saw Medina and North Royalton a week earlier. North Royalton did not impress at all. Quite shocked they won music. Medina was way stronger at that show. Can’t speak to Kings but assume their show design and concept is superior to what I have seen from Medina and NR. Those two present a typical Ohio show. They would not fare well in a Midstates or BOA show. So you bring up a fascinating subject.
I saw North Royalton live at their home festival on Sep. 14, and I've seen video of both their performance and Medina's performance at the Revere competition on Sep. 28, which you apparently attended (in that, you were joined by several friends of mine). In fact, I commented at quite some length on Royalton's performance on the Youtube video from Revere, explaining to some Royalton parents why it seems perfectly reasonable to me that they came in fourth (behind Medina, Amherst Steele and Brunswick -- although I haven't seen that last group yet).
North Royalton, under their current director (and dating back to when he was still the assistant director but was already, as now, arranging their music and writing their drill) isn't like any other band I've ever seen. They're not a "typical Ohio" band at all. Nobody puts on shows like theirs -- although Medina perhaps, sometimes, comes closest. There's a real argument to be made that what Royalton is doing is almost in a separate category from marching band, and especially from marching band as it's generally understood these days. It's like if you went to see a Broadway musical and instead you were presented with an Irish step-dance show. There's music, and there's lots of movement, and on the surface the show checks all the boxes on the sheets, meeting every requirement, but it's ... just something else.
So no, Royalton would not do well in BOA or MSBA, and they shouldn't. Those circuits have their own expectations, and Royalton wouldn't meet them, and thus shouldn't be rewarded there. But OMEA is more accepting of different approaches to what marching band can be (sometimes there are even football-style performances, sans guard or front ensemble, and as long as they're sufficiently challenging and clean, they make the cut), and Royalton has chosen to take a very different approach. And I admit: it's not an approach I particularly like. But I can't deny their commitment and their achievement. I feel like North Royalton's shows rather like I feel about the "Scream" movies: I don't like slasher films, so I don't see much point in making parody slasher films, but if you're going to set that as your goal, the "Scream" films are very well done.
But by the rules that Royalton sets for themselves, they can be very impressive, and as I said, at Perkins, they'd cleaned up their music remarkably over the previous week, doing a lot more with dynamics and bringing out the middle parts and the trickier passages, and as always, a huge percentage of their playing happens on the move (nobody in the state and maybe nobody anywhere marches and plays more -- that need not be read either as a compliment or a criticism). And so yes, they were rewarded best music, as they deserved.
I came in fully expecting Kings to win, based on their productions from the past two years. And they did. But since they didn't win best music--and probably should have been third in that caption--which in past years I would have said was one of their clear strengths, I'm baffled at how they threaded that needle.

Here's one I attended tonight:
29th Annual Art in Motion -- Norton H.S., Ohio (OMEA)
Class C 1. Black River -- I 2. New London
Class A 1. New Philadelphia -- I 2. Coventry 3. Marlington (exh.: Norton -- I)
Class AA 1. Nordonia -- I 2. Amherst -- I 3. Hoover -- I 4. Brunswick -- I 5. Willoughby South -- I
(And Kent State U. appeared in exhibition.)
No overall caption awards were announced, but in Class AA, Nordonia took best visual and guard, Amherst took best music, and Hoover took best percussion.
Nordonia was much stronger than they had appeared on the Muncie webcast, and I was surprised they didn't take best music, as well.
Brunswick's show, "Emblems of Liberty!", is challenging show but far from clean. They open with Morton Gould's "American Salute", and I found it impossible not to think of Broken Arrow last year and Grove City the year before. I was sorry to learn that their director of many years, Jay Wardeska, is on a medical leave of absence.

Looked like they were having technical difficulties with their pre-show. Not that any competition day is not difficult, but this was a challenging day for all the bands because of the early snow hitting the region. Between rehearsing in freezing temperature and all the logistics that comes with Band, I can only admire what Directors and band kids do. That said all the bands performed admirably in the warm and comfy US Bank Stadium. I hope someday we have a BOA event there too.

The million dollar question....is Lake Park going to make finals? This could be a repeat of the finals rainout of two years ago where they were the last band into finals, or they could just as easily be out of finals. 7th place at DGS this weekend wasn't a great look. The other thing...4A could very well be wide open this year. Batavia has had somewhat of a down year, and Hersey got off to a really slow start. Romeoville could win their class here, or slip in on score. This is the most competitive class here, when you add in Rock Island, Pekin AND Elk Grove. (And thank God ISU is FINALLY rotating class order in prelims. Sorry, 1A shouldn't be forced to go first every year.) My predictions: 1A: Eureka 2A: Morton 3A: Duh 4A: Hersey (I guess...) Other 1A-4A Finalists: Bloomington, Dunlap, Romeoville, Rock Island, Batavia. Quite possibly in that order. 5A: Prospect 6A: Lincoln-Way Other 5A-6A Finalists: Lockport, VJA, Downers Grove South, Joliet West, Edwardsville, Plainfield North I think Lincoln-Way will repeat as champions, but Marian will make it close.

OMEA Hilliard Class B 1. Van Wert [...] OMEA Versailles Class AA 1. Middletown (lost superior due to penalty but still won Grand Champion) Class C 1. Dixie Heights Thanks as always for this information! At first I assumed "Van Wert" at the Hilliard show must be a typo for "Van Buren", but no: the latter band was at Columbus Grove. The former band doesn't normally play at competitions (they were at the Buckeye Invitational in Class B two or three years ago) and yep, the band's Facebook page confirms they went to Hilliard (and "You should know... FIVE different random people stopped me on the way to the bus to say 'your show was our favorite of the night'".) That result from Versailles with Middletown not getting a Superior rating due to a penalty is wild! I believe a penalty costs a band one caption rating. So unless they had multiple penalties, that implies Middletown only got a Superior rating in four out of of seven captions. And yet had a higher score than two other bands who also did that well. Nice to see Marion Local joins Troy and Newark in continuing their unbroken streak of SMBF appearances. I had noticed the schedule for the Columbus Grove show had St. John's Jesuit in Class B and I wondered if that was a mistake, because in previous seasons, tiny though the band is, they've had to compete in Class AA because they've partnered with two or three all-girls' Catholic schools in Toledo, and OMEA made them count the total enrollment. I wonder if they're given up those partnerships or if OMEA gave them some sort of dispensation (as they apparently had been doing for St. Edward, whose membership includes girls from Magnifcat and St. Joseph). Shocking to see Licking Valley in fourth at Meadowbrook. They've never been one of my favorite bands, but they have previously deserved to be ranked pretty high in Class B. The results from shows from Ohio's deep south (Northwest, Valley, etc.) are a hoot, with all those little schools (Class B at their largest) choosing to compete in Class A or AA. Checking MSBA's recaps, I see that Finneytown, in that circuit's Class 4A (based on band membership) but in OMEA's Class B and thus BOA's Class A, was actually second overall: well behind Miamisburg but just ahead of Fairfield and Worthington Kilbourne. I was really impressed last year when I saw Finneytown at OMEA state finals. It looks like Miamisburg took all captions and subcaptions except Music Performance Individual ... where they were third? (And two points behind Fairfield?)

Middletown received straight 1s but got a 10 penalty so they ended up with a 2. I am not sure where the “lowers one caption” rumor ever got started but it has never been the rule.

I wonder... how do penalties work at state finals, where there are no scores?
I remember one of the only two times I've seen a band get a III at state finals was Delaware Hayes in 1991 or 1992, when I was selling programs at that event. I remember that they had trooped the stands (played after leaving the field) --which I knew to be against the rules-- and I wondered if that was the cause of their low rating.
(The other time I saw a III issued was the most recent time that happened, in 2013 or 2014, for Big Walnut, and that was based on performance. In my notes as they performed, I wrote something like, "Yikes! This may be rated a III!")

Penalties at state finals work literally the exact same way as they would at a local show. Certain penalties carry a certain point deduction. For example, going over time by a certain amount is a 5 point penalty, over another threshold is 10, etc. If you hit 10, you lower a rating. Last year, both Loveland and Newton incurred 5 point penalties at SMBF, which did not change their rating. I believe Miamisburg might have had a penalty a couple years ago when they had an electronics issue as well, but they also still received a superior.

I do remember Miamisburg had a looooong delay at the start of their "Lost Vegas" show (pretty sure I wrote "penalty?" in my notebook).
