Finally got to see Avon and Carmel's prelims performances. These two seem as close as ever. I think Carmel's design is more interesting and will put them at the advantage for GE, but Avon's performance was generally more impressive across the board (with the possible exception of the color guard, which I'm terrible at judging anyway). Carmel's trumpets sounded a bit scruffier than usual, but if they iron that out in finals they've got a solid shot at the music caption. By my judging, Avon's definitely got a lead in visual achievement, however.

Wow this definitely seems like a different Mason than usual in terms of design. First, that was a lot of running and athleticism needed for a pre-show! The brass book is very noticeably much more difficult than in past years, where to me the woodwinds were carrying the majority of the show in the past. Visual design in this show is extremely good and very worthy of competing against Avon and Carmel. I think the only thing I wanted more was a bit more volume and power (are my speakers just too low??). Also, did not think I would hear Lux Aurumque again! Pretty unique show overall; kind of reminded me of a cross between Broken Arrow 2017 and LD Bell 2010 for some reason. Not your speakers. I've said for MANY years that Mason needs to increase the top of their dynamic range. They have both the talent and the numbers to do so to good effect.

Does ANYONE think that William Mason might be above Carmel or Avon tonight? I sure do!

Did...did you just say Hebron has difficult visual repertoires? 2018 and this year both have hard drill. It's not really effective and a lot of it is inexplicably hidden, but it's a lot more than other bands in the state, especially considering their musical demand on the move. I think there is also a difference between overt demand and subtle demand. Indiana is very much about that overt demand that is in your face and easy to see. Subtle demand is something I've come to notice more in my years of observing and have really come to appreciate how well Texas has been able to incorporate it into their shows. Groups like Reagan, Vandegrift, and even Marcus to name a few. Now what is rewarded more, that's certainly up for the judge to decide. Either way, you have to perform what is given to you.

Anyone else thinking there’s a decent chance Pickerington North takes one of the last Finals spots tonight? We still have North Hardin to go, but I feel like PN wasn’t terribly far off from Goshen or Franklin Central. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s a safe show that inspires very little in the way of emotion, but all aspects worked together well and each design entity was well though out. They seemed to be crystal clean in both marching & music! The band sounded nice and full. Well, considering I have them 33rd currently in my rankings... that's a no for me heh

Something that isn’t obvious, exactly. It’s puzzling when you might see Marcus in the bubble spots for grands when in Texas, especially in DFW, the bands here know how well Marcus caters to any judging system they lay their eyes on. Their consistency in that respect is undeniable.

I thought volume-wise, they were quite good in 2019, even in-person at LOS, although they lacked the clarity many of the Texas bands had in their brass. This year on stream, they sounded overall pretty quiet until the closer.

I think there's a much stronger possibility of an Indiana top 3 tonight than there is of Mason coming close to Avon or Carmel.

Am I the only one that wishes Avon would do shows that are a little more risky theme wise? Like Fish Tale! That was so good.
