While I do think it's quite the longshot for finals, I haven't seen anyone mention Wylie in their bubble yet. They had a very strong performance at Area even taking a visual judge from Marcus. It's a very UIL-friendly show so it probably doesn't have the legs to make it all the way into finals, but they play and move extremely well and will surprise people this weekend. Ceiling of 14th, floor of 22nd, most likely in the 16-18 range in my opinion. They placed 36th in 2021, 18th in 2019, 44th in 2018. A wild card for sure! Yeah, they're certainly very interesting to watch from year to year. This is gonna definitely one of those 2019 years as opposed to 2021 or 2018

Really loved their show!

While in recent years undervaluing the Houston area bands has maybe been correct, The Woodlands will be top half at least, and both Cy-Fair and Pearland will be either in finals or right at the cutoff. I think 3 Houston area bands in finals could really be a thing this year.
Could I be wrong? Of course! I recommend reviewing The Woodlands area F video if it is still up.

I could definitely see Pearland and/or Cy-Fair making finals here, both are very strong this year. TWHS in top half might be a bit of a bold call because while they definitely still are a safe lock for finals, they aren't as strong as they have been the past few years and there will be multiple top half deserving bands who will be in the first seven groups to perform on finals night. I think this year will top 2017 for most competitive BOA SA contest ever.

“Final” schedule has posted with a few changes. Medina Valley is no longer on the schedule. First band is Georgetown at 9:15 a.m. Friday McCallum has moved from 7:30 a.m. Saturday to 2:00 p.m. Friday (where there was originally a break) and is still on Panel 1. Veterans Memorial (Friday 5:00 p.m. on Panel 1) and Robert E. Hendrickson (Friday 5:30 p.m. on Panel 2) have swapped spots and panel assignments. Saturday now starts at 7:30 a.m. with Pecos. Oak Ridge has moved from 7:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. (where there was originally a break) and is still on Panel 2.

If you're paying close attention to the schedule, that means no breaks from 7:30 all the way to 12:45 on Saturday. Make sure to break out those portable diapers...

This show is just as strong as recent years (imo stronger than '15, '16, '17, '18, '19 and '20, maybe not quite '21 strong). I am actually very (pleasantly) surprised - I was highly skeptical going into the director change, and I did not like the show the first few times I saw it.
The video is still up:

I kind of agree on the woodlands. I think they are actually sounding very clean with less mud than usual. But I really don’t think last years show can be topped in terms of just sheer originality and creativity

But I really don’t think last years show can be topped in terms of just sheer originality and creativity Let’s maybe slow it down a bit. We will probably never have another Avon 2010, Woodlands 2013, CTJ 2017, FloMo 2016, RR 2019 and Hebron 2021 but this Woodlands show has a variation and depth of its own. I don’t see them in the top half of SASR but they will final imo? The only supposed mud I see presently is music 🎵 but it is minimal. Building from last years design and effect, they will do amazing in San Antonio to be sure. Those Guards! I can’t wait!

I already went ahead and posted something similar over on TxBands but don’t sleep on Coppell y’all! After seeing them live at Area B, I can say without a doubt that they’re absolutely phenomenal this year and that they’re very much continuing on their upward trajectory from last year. I would not be surprised to see them creep into both the top 5 of their panel and, assuming they make finals, finals top half with the right run.

Yeah I admit I wasn’t the biggest fan Coppell’s show at first but it really started to grow on me as I started to understand it more. It’s really interesting how it goes about depicting the writing of a story through both the typewriter effects/moving typewriter stage and all of the different themes or “archetypes” that are revealed in each movement. From a literature’s perspective you’ve got the explorer in movement 2, the lover in the ballad, you could even make arguments for the the sage in the opener or the hero in the closer as it starts to sound a bit more triumphant towards the end. It’s really pretty cool I have to say.

If you're paying close attention to the schedule, that means no breaks from 7:30 all the way to 12:45 on Saturday. Make sure to break out those portable diapers... Don't bother with the national brands - the store brands at Target, CVS, and Walgreens are just as good. Note: I do not speak from experience using the products but rather from the perspective of working in the industry. My recommendation of the above options do not reflect any official endorsement.

Klein Oak finally completed their show and put it on the field this past weekend for UIL. Nobody talks a lot about them but I think if they finish polishing it up this week they may also have an outside shot at finals. I've watched this band the last 5 years and they've gotten increasingly better every year and I hope they continue in the future and become one of those Texas bands people talk about.

Long shot for finals obviously, but I think they’re a bubble contender. They’ve been ahead of Westwood all season when they’ve competed, if I’m not mistaken. Usually outperforms Wylie in BOA, just not UIL. Also even though I quoted you abtwitch, I’m speaking to everyone. 😄

A wild card for sure! they’re probably in at top 25 somewhere, even with the crazy swings in showings it usually isn’t the best indicator of the band’s performance quality, many good bands outside of finals have these kinds of wacky placement swings. It’s just the nature of this competition haha

Final Predictions:
1. Hebron (M/GE) 2. Vandegrift 3. Ronald Reagan (V) 4. Cedar Ridge 5. Claudia Taylor Johnson 6. Flower Mound 7. Vista Ridge 8. Marcus 9. Coppell 10. Cedar Park 11. The Woodlands 12. Round Rock 13. Westlake 14. Cy-Fair
The bubble for those last couple spots is massive and I could see any of Keller, Leander, Rouse, James Bowie, Timber Creek, Waxahachie, Klein Oak, etc. getting in finals. At the same time I think any of the top 11 bands I have down could get into the top half. The only placement I do feel confident in happening is Hebron, as they are just absolutely insane this year. Super excited to see this super regional!

Did Ld Bell slip all of your minds ? I don't believe that LD Bell has slipped anyone's minds. LD Bell is doing well this season but I do not see them in finals. The last 2 times that I have seen them they have performed well but not at the level of the other bands mentioned above them. From this list who which performance by Bell would beat the most recent performances by each of these bands? None that I can think of. I believe that this list is very solid based upon recent contest performances. Bell has historically been an amazing performing band. The current show is not Bell from their best years. They are on a trajectory to return though. The only band that I can see out of this list being overtaken by Bell is Pearland. Westlake is having their best season in ages, Coppell is absolutely on point this year, TWHS is playing the heck out of their show right now. Panel 1: Claudia Taylor Johnson Flower Mound Marcus Ronald Reagan Round Rock Panel 2: Cedar Park Cedar Ridge Hebron Vandegrift Vista Ridge Next 4: Coppell (2) Pearland (1) The Woodlands (2) Westlake (2)
