This looks to be a very interesting Grand Nationals. This is a year where the big Texas powers are not attending. While this is a little disappointing, it does open the door for a lot of 'bubble bands' a chance in finals. In this particular year there are a ton of bands that could feasibly fall into the 7th through 15th place in semi finals. The other interesting aspect that this year offers is the potential for a lot of first time Grand National Finalist bands. The last time there were more than three first time finalists was in 2002 when we had 4. The last time there were more than 4 first time finalists was 1985 with 6.
Of the bands that many on these forums have put as potential finalists that have never been a finalist before (including a couple long shots) are: James F Byrnes SC, Fishers IN, Brownsburg IN, Lincoln-Way IL, Rosemount MN, Mustang OK, M&G Johnson TX and Hendrickson TX. Another interesting point is that many have American Fork making finals. They only made finals once way back in 1995. If they make finals, they would have a 27 year gap between finals appearances, which would be a record. The current record is 20 years set by both Ben Davis and Homestead.

Oh heck, I'll add my 2 cents worth:
In no order to make finals:
Avon Broken Arrow Carmel Dobyns-Bennett William Mason Tarpon Springs Moe & Gene Johnson O'Fallon Kiski Mustang American Fork **Fishers **Brownsburg **Fishers & Brownsburg will battle it out.

I don't think they'll ultimately make it, but I think this year's show will get them a heck of a lot closer than they have been in recent years. I could easily see this show landing them in the mid-teens.

Time is limited (days available to rehearse between now and next weekend, not to mention UIL restrictions).

The answer is complicated but somewhere along the lines of "far more than anyone referencing the UIL time restriction wants you to believe they have"

The answer is complicated but somewhere along the lines of "far more than anyone referencing the UIL time restriction wants you to believe they have" I think they are referring more to the fact that it's less than a week away and they have to travel to Indy. Fortunately they aren't going to state next week so that gives a bit of time.

I think the best adjective I have to describe CTJ brass in the last several years is “explosive” lol. Those marching French horns give them such a distinct sound. I do appreciate what they’re doing with their arrangements of The Planets, it’s not the same old stuff we hear every year. Didn’t get a great read on visual stuff but they’ll be playing again tomorrow so I guess I’ll see then

I can't seem to remember, but what time do semifinals usually start on Saturday? I know it's early, but this alum mom is planning a trip downtown to watch the best 30ish bands around next weekend. Just trying to remember how early I'll have to get up...

I'll play... GN Finals results, in order...
Avon Broken Arrow Carmel
I think Avon has the Vis / Music package this year. Overall GE compared BA is anyone's guess. Their program is a beast this year. It's red and black and dark and powerful. The balled lightens the mood between the beginning and the end. I appreciate the 'minimalist' approach to their show design. I even like the dark spin on their "Old 100th" warmup... Did I mention their program is a beast this year?

They might crack the top 3.

And I think you're underestimating recent Hebron shows if you say they "might" crack the top 3.

So Hendrickson placed 25th at SA To be honest, this doesn’t change much for me. They are still healthily in the grand nationals bubble. They were in a very similar position comparatively to earlier competitions (such as Austin), and while there may have been some minor shuffling, this also shows that they’re in a similar position to Prosper. Both are definitely in the conversation for finals, but both will have to have their best show like so many others to make it in to that fortunate crew. With how stacked this super regional was great job to all those kids! Henny train next stop: Grand Nats!

Southlake Carroll beat Keller Central last week at UIL area B finals and then KC goes and places in the top 20 at San Antonio. I know that placements and scores aren't transitive, particularly between BOA and UIL, but I'm curious if this is a sign that Southlake Carroll is stronger than we thought and still squarely on the finals bubble or just a case of KC rapidly improving in a week?
