Confirmed: Wayne Valley H.S., NJ (band calendar) WOW! That surprising. What can I say about Wayne Valley. Wayne Valley High School located at Wayne, NJ and opened in 1952. They're generally an small band I believe the highest Group they competed is Group III which is usually 54 to 70 members in the band. Mainly competing in USBands. In 2021: They were NJMBDA NJ Class A State Champion and winning 1st place in their division in every competition. In USBands National Group I-Open they received 2nd place losing to Glen Ridge HS (NJ) by 0.8 points even though Glen Ridge was losing to Wayne Valley throughout the season. No color guard btw this year. NJMBDA Class A Champion Performance In 2020: They were Division 1 v-USBands Champion many times beating bands like Pulaski County (KY), Nolan Catholic (TX), and Providence Catholic (IL), and only losing Pulaski County 2 times. In 2014: USBands Group II-A National Championships (93.663), didn't compete in USBands Group II-A NJ States. Many of their States performance usually ranges around 3rd place to 2nd to last as well their Nationals Championships performances. But they're growing in power after 2020 Wishing Wayne Valley H.S. an amazing year. ππ

Happily to announce! Our 2nd first timer at BOA!
Confirmed:
Randolph H.S., NJ - (Bands of America Regional Championships at Rutgers University)
(Source) Band Calendar
Randolph mainly compete in Independent Invitationals and Yamaha Cup and barely did any TOB/MAC/COB/NYSFBC competition or USBands States and Nationals so I don't have much history on them plus, they aren't really super competitive like some the other big band. Randolph has always stayed above 140 members but since COVID happened they have dropped to Group III (A-Class) which is around 60-79 members. In 2019, they moved from an Group VI-A band to Group VI Festival band (It was an good show). In 2021, They did two NJMBDA earliest competition placing second to last in their 3A division but 3rd and 10th overall score in the first two NJMBDA comp. and lastly, USBands States.
History: Yamaha Cup: 2008: Yamaha Cup Group VI-A Champion 2010: Runner-Up Yamaha Cup Group VI-A Champion losing to Whippany Park HS (NJ) by 3.788 points 2011: Last Place in Yamaha Cup Group VI-A: 1st: Jackson Memorial (NJ), 2nd: New Providence (NJ), 3rd: Scotch Plains-Fanwood (NJ), 4th: Port Chester (NY) 2016: Placing 5th place out of 7 bands in Yamaha Cup Group VI-A Championships losing in order of 1st:New Providence (NJ), 2nd: West Orange (NJ), 3rd: Hunterdon Central Regional (NJ), 4th: Port Chester (NY) 2017: Last Place in Yamaha Cup Group VI-A Championships 1st: Hunterdon Central Regional (NJ), 2nd: New Providence (NJ), 3rd: Port Chester (NY), 4th: Jackson Memorial (NJ), 5th: Tottenville HS (NY) 2018: Yamaha Cup Group VI-A Champion beating Tottenville (NY) and New Milford (CT)
USBands NJ States: In 2016: Earning last place: Competing in Group VI-A Championships and losing to 1st: New Providence, 2nd: Hunterdon Central Regional, 3rd: Westfield, 4th: Jackson Memorial In 2017: Earning Last place in Group VI-A Championships losing to 1st: Jackson Memorial HS, 2nd: Hunterdon Central Regional, 3rd: New Providence, 4th: Phillipsburg In 2021: Earning the last place in Group III-A Championships losing to: 1st: West Milford, 2nd: Nutley, 3rd Robbinsville, 4th; Vernon Township
Wishing Randolph HS some good luck for 2022!
NJ is winning and CA is lose. π California Regional -1 π

Out of curiosity, does NJ have any kind of State contest? Whether that is sponsored like Texas or Indiana, or unofficially like Illinois' ISU State contest? Or is USBands the defacto circuit then for them.

Out of curiosity, does NJ have any kind of State contest? Whether that is sponsored like Texas or Indiana, or unofficially like Illinois' ISU State contest? Or is USBands the defacto circuit then for them. The northeast and mid-atlantic area has been quite a noisy area in terms of region and circuits for decades now, including two key circuits pulling in most of the NJ bands (US Bands and Tournament of Bands). Both circuits extend across many states and have historically had state or "chapter" championships leading into their main event. This past year, a new circuit was launched for New Jersey bands called the New Jersey Band Directors Association. It's a NJ circuit governed by the members/band directors as opposed to being sanctioned by any other governing body. Of course, not all NJ bands have fully bought in and plenty still compete in US Bands/TOB.

Out of curiosity, does NJ have any kind of State contest? Whether that is sponsored like Texas or Indiana, or unofficially like Illinois' ISU State contest? Or is USBands the defacto circuit then for them. Tournament of Bands and USBands were the only two defacto marching arts circuits that had NJ States Championships back then, but USBands was the popular States of the two, they usually had 100+ Attendee in three/two different locations. Tournament of Bands before would usually get below 30 bands competing in NJ States. Over the years TOB NJ States has become more popular for small bands and a small number of large band getting somewhere around 40-60 bands competing. In 2020 a group of directors I believe from Millville, Westfield, Clearview Regional, and Wayne Valley High Schools decided to form New Jersey Marching Band Director Association all before COVID to create NJ base sponsor marching arts organization. - "The New Jersey Marching Band Directors Association is a volunteer organization providing performance opportunities for all New Jersey marching bands, governed and facilitated by participating directors. We seek to expose all marching bands to the highest level of musical/visual adjudication, that ultimately fosters educational growth for our students, staff, and community at large. We fervently believe that all bands, regardless of size, budget, and resources, deserve the best possible performance and judging experiences. We are whole-heartedly committed to fiscal responsibility, as we keep requisite fees low, while simultaneously providing an infrastructure where host bands can have a successful fundraising experience." So we have three State Contest for NJMBDA, USBands, Tournament of Bands now.

Dartmouth has yet to sign up for US Bands New England State Championships. This is a bit odd for them, especially given they've already signed up for US Bands Nationals and other events. While I still fully expect them to stay in the US Bands bubble, they did hire a new director in 2020 with a ton of Drum Corps experience so I suppose there IS that 1% chance. They even launched their first WGI winds group this past year, so, to my surprise, I won't put it quite at 0% chance just yet. IK! I saw that too! Could be seeing a mouth confirmed on that list π. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Keeping my fingers crossed. I spoke too soon. They are confirmed. A bit about Dartmouth: -They are from a small coastal town on the southern waterfront of Massachusetts by the Rhode Island border. -They will be only the 4th band from MA competing in BOA. -They are a small AA school. They have about 1000 total students at the high school and 700-750 eligible 10-12. -The biggest they've ever been was roughly 130 members in the mid 2000s. Lately, they've been averaging between 100-110 (100 this past year, but only 45 winds). -The only way they are able to maintain their membership above 100 is to allow middle schoolers to march. They have kids as young as 6th grade in the colorguard and 7th grade in winds/percussion. I'd estimate middle school involvement to account for 20-30% of band size. Instrumental music begins in the 4th grade which allows for easier outreach to the one middle school as kids already have a couple of years of band under them. -They are the US Bands overall champion six times (2021, 2017-2019, 2010-2011) and have won their class championship the past five years and 12 times total since joining US Bands in the early 2000s (2016-2021, 2013, 2008-2011, and 2003-2004). They tied the US Bands scoring record in 2019. -Their percussion program is the strongest section of the band. They have been competing in WGI's world class since 1998 and have five championships and have never fallen out of the top 5, and have only fallen out of the top 3 three times in 22 appearances. -They have made a huge effort to build out their guard program, building them up from a Scholastic Regional A guard to a Scholastic A silver medalist and ultimately a Scholastic Open finalist. -Historically, the designers have been Jay Bocook (arranger), Jeff Sacktig (visual - long time Cadets designer and now Crown), Tom Aungst (percussion/show design - longtime Cadets caption head), and Addison Kaeterle (guard - former Oregon Crusaders caption head, now with Spartans). I believe these past couple of years they may have brought music and visual fully in-house, but I could be wrong. I'm beyond excited that they're making their first dip into BOA this year. I'm proud of what they've accomplished locally, especially as a fully self-funded program, and one that doesn't have the biggest pool to draw from given their school and town size and being in an area where the marching arts are falling behind the rest of the country. No expectations from me - just excited to see them here.
